As we close out hashtag#BlackHistoryMonth in the UK, we spoke to Peter Malpas, our EMEA President to find out why he has become the new ExCo sponsor of our EmbRACE Employee Resource Group. He said: "I am delighted to be the new sponsor of the EmbRACE ERG. I'm aware that I am in a position of privilege and am keen to learn, listen and support. "We all know that growth and comfort doesn't co-exist, so we must lean into the uncomfortable conversations in a safe space, so that we can all learn and grow. I'm taking this opportunity to encourage you to engage with EmbRACE and give yourself the tools to be able to participate in conversations by listening and asking questions so that we can all become more aware of what it means to be part of an ethnically diverse, minoritized group. "I will be personally taking this opportunity to grow and I will pay it forward across my teams and with my peers. Because at RS D&I is not just a tick box exercise. I can honestly tell you this from the conversations that are happening around the ExCo table, where everybody is committed to creating a genuinely inclusive workplace that understands and celebrates our colleagues across the business. "We all need to be accountable for building a diverse and inclusive global organisation. I'm excited to see what lies ahead and I look forward to working with Menaka S., Teimur Aziz, Alex R. and the EmbRACE community." hashtag#BHM2024 hashtag#WeAreRS hashtag#EmbRACE

We always love working with Dr. Shini Somara // BEng(Hons) EngD HonFIED and we're delighted that she has been included in our REflect Top 24 Role Models for 2024 list. Originally a qualified Mechanical Engineer, specialising in the research and development of computational fluid dynamics, Shini is an author, award-winning broadcaster & host in engineering, science & tech. Q1. What is your greatest achievement in your career? "The greatest achievement of my career has been in finding my own voice in engineering and in turn helping those of us who are under-represented in STEM to find their own voice. It was unconventional to have completed an Engineering Doctorate by the age of 24; and with no media training, appear on mainstream television to talk about STEM, write several STEM books and to provide free STEM education via digital platforms that have helped over 60 million people around the world to consider STEM careers themselves." Q2. Who or what inspires you in your work? “Talent, passion, intelligence and humility inspires me. I aspire to develop these qualities in myself, but when I recognise them in others, I am so inspired. There is nothing more aspirational than watching people be the best versions of themselves - it motivates me to be my best self too! ” Q3. Please provide one piece of advice for future global ethnic-majority engineers. “Make a difference through your differences. Diversity is the spice of life!” The Top 24 for 2024 list was produced in part
“I’m lucky, I’ve never been scared to speak up when I’m at work. I think the more we share our thoughts constructively, the happier we can be. If everyone finds their voice and uses it, we can do good things.” RS colleague Thomas Hardouin is no stranger to using his voice, as a singer and songwriter in choirs and pop-rock bands for over 25 years. We caught up with him to discuss why it is important for everybody to feel heard in the workplace.

We may be spread across multiple countries and continents, but giving back brings us together. We asked two keen RS volunteers to share their experiences of volunteering in their hometowns. Divided by 1800km but connected by care, we sat down with Bonnie Dunion and Anna Cudny to discuss how they have turned their passion for volunteering into practical – and much-needed – support in their local communities. “It all starts with finding something you’re passionate about and feel you can help with,” says Bonnie, Project Owner for Help & Support, based in Corby, UK. “I couldn’t agree more,” adds Anna, Office Manager in Warsaw, Poland. “For me it started at the biggest children’s hospital here in Warsaw. It’s very personal to me as they looked after my daughter when she was five. It was a horrible place then – there were no windows and it was dark. So, to give back to this place that did so much for my daughter, my team helped paint a corridor in the psychiatric ward to make it lighter and brighter.” It hasn’t all been straightforward though, as Anna and the team ran out of paint and money before they managed to finish. That didn’t stop her, as she says: “I raised the money to buy the extra paint from local businesses and RS. I’m quite stubborn, once I’ve started something I want to finish it.
