Sartorius and SPARTA Biodiscovery, a spin-out company from Imperial College London, have agreed to partner on SPARTA’s analysis platform, which helps speed up the development, manufacture, and quality control of nanoparticles used for gene therapies, vaccines, and cancer drugs. “The SPARTA platform will help customers optimize the design of nanoparticles at an early stage, even before the drug candidates move on to the clinic. We have teamed up to bring additional product commercialization and application expertise to the table to facilitate a swift transitioning from prototype to launch,” said Prof. Dr. Oscar-Werner Reif, Head of Corporate Research and CTO at Sartorius. This week, we celebrated a symbolic groundbreaking for the new production facility at our site in Freiburg, Germany. Let’s take this occasion to reflect on the beginnings of cytokine production at Sartorius CellGenix. Back in 2002, Fred Simon, a working student at that time, and some colleagues saw the chance to manufacture high-quality cytokines themselves when the available options didn’t meet GMP standards. Based on Fred's DNA, their idea led to the production of the first cytokines at CellGenix. Read on the Sartorius Blog, how Fred’s blood became a game changer, paving the way to becoming a leading player in pre-clinical and GMP cytokine production for the cell and gene therapy market, and how the team is growing with Sartorius: https://srtrs.info/gqtpu
Construction started in Freiburg! The symbolic groundbreaking today marked the start of a significant expansion of the existing production and R&D activities in Freiburg. In the Southwest of Germany, Sartorius is building a new center of excellence for developing and producing quality-critical materials for the cell and gene therapy market. With a gross floor area of almost 10,000 square meters, the new building will include production rooms, laboratories, and further space for technology and offices. The facility will be operated in a CO2-neutral manner, among other things, through the use of geothermal energy for heating, cold well water for cooling, photovoltaic power generation and a green facade. MSCI, one of the world's leading providers of ESG ratings, upgraded Sartorius from A to AA in its recent analysis. This year, only 10% of companies received a higher rating. The scorecard consists of three categories: environmental, social and governance. Sartorius scored particularly well for "strong management practices to address carbon emissions relative to peers, including targets to reduce carbon emissions", "fewer apparent product recalls compared to peers", "governance practices that appear generally well aligned with investor interests", and "evidence of detailed policies on business ethics and corruption". Especially in the governance category MSCI rated Sartorius well above the industry average. Learn more about sustainability at Sartorius: www.sartorius.com/sustainability

How much startup is in your research? Around thirty PhD students and postdocs were invited to think about this question at a "phd-to-innovator" workshop at the Sartorius Campus in Göttingen. The two-day workshop, organized by Sartorius' partner Young Entrepreneurs in Science, aims to open up new career perspectives for highly qualified young researchers. The curriculum included personal reflection, training in entrepreneurial methods such as design thinking and a Q&A session with role models. Andrea Ernst, Head of Normal Flow Filtration Materials at Sartorius, participated as a mentor for intrapreneurship and shared her experiences: "In my journey from the lab to leading teams, I've found that innovation truly comes alive when research meets entrepreneurial spirit."
