At Starling, we all get 16 volunteering hours to use each year. Plus, we’ve recently partnered with the National Trust. A match made in heaven? We think so 😉 Some of our colleagues recently used their volunteering hours to head to Osterley Park. They cut back brambles and painted fences to make the space nicer for future visitors. We’ve partnered with the National Trust to improve access to nature and to fund sustainability projects, such as protecting and restoring peatland, one of our most important terrestrial carbon stores. Fancy a trip to the National Trust yourself? Refer a friend to Starling and you’ll both earn a free day out at a National Trust location of your choice. This summer saw the first year of the new StartUp Awards. Thousands of entries and hundreds of winners were involved in an awesome display of the vibrant and energetic UK startup scene. We’re so happy to be involved as a national sponsor and can’t wait to see where these fantastic young companies go over the next 12 months. Congratulations to all the winners, in particular to the Fintech winners Predictiva, Hydr, straitPay and Driverly. Welcome to the jungle! Banking was broken, so Starling decided to fix it. The vision? Fast technology, fairer service and honest values. In this free networking event you can meet the team leading the marketing and communications for the UK’s first digital bank – and forget everything you know about banking. Join us at Rich Mix in Shoreditch, London, on Wednesday 14 June where our Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Alexandra Frean, will host a panel and Q&A with leaders from across our communication, creative and marketing teams. They’ll talk about why they joined Starling, what they do and how our values as a company influence our approach to marketing and communications. So, what can you expect? The Starling story – how the business went from a start-up to a trusted, award-winning bank. Our test-and-learn culture, why teams are encouraged to take risks – and how Starling is changing banking for good. People from across these teams will be in the audience so there’s a chance to meet and chat with them too. Doors open 6.30pm for drinks and canapés, ready for a 7pm start.
We’ve recently launched our new partnership with National Trust. From houses, buildings and gardens to coast and countryside: the National Trust works hard to protect our native wildlife, landscape and historic sites, and to make nature accessible for everyone. We’re also committed to doing our part to look after the planet, from sustainable packaging to recycled debit cards. Working with The National Trust, we’re investing in sustainability projects, such as protecting and restoring peatland - one of our most important terrestrial carbon stores - in places like Snowdonia, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales, Exmoor and Dartmoor. Through this partnership, we’ve also launched our new refer-a-friend scheme! Send your referral link to a pal and – if they sign up – you’ll both earn a free day out at a National Trust, or National Trust for Scotland, site of your choice.
Today we have announced that Anne Boden, founder of Starling Bank, is to step aside as CEO on 30 June. The move comes as we report: - pre-tax profits 6x to £195m - revenue 2x to £453m - deposit base +17% to £10.6bn - lending +48% to £4.9bn Anne will remain on the Board as a non-exec director. John Mountain, Starling’s COO, will take over as interim CEO to lead the digital bank into its next phase of growth. She said: “When I started Starling in 2014, I was told no one ever starts a bank, nobody wins market share and you’ll never make a profit. Today’s results prove them wrong. We’ve succeeded in disrupting an entire industry. I’m immensely proud of these results, which are a testament to how far we have come as a team and how fast we’ve moved as a business. Handing over to John will enable me to focus on my position as a shareholder, championing Starling and ensuring we hold true to our values and vision of changing banking for the better. To the team, thank you. Together we have revolutionised the face of banking. To our 3.6 million customers – thank you for believing in us."
Smart Works Charity is an award-winning charity that gives unemployed women the tools and confidence they need to get a job and secure financial independence. Currently 72% of women go on to get a job within one month of their visit. Smart Works believe in the power of clothes and coaching to transform a woman’s confidence. We visited their offices last week to see this in action! As they say themselves, “It is about much more than the clothes she is gifted: it is about what the clothes allow each woman to become. When she looks in the mirror, she begins to see hope and possibility for a better future.” Since November 2022, we've committed to help the charity hit their goal. They plan to double their numbers by 2025, when they aim to help 10,000 women a year. You can read more about the great work Smart Works do, below.

“In many organisations change is seen as something to wrestle into submission, to contain and to fear. But to view change as an enemy stifles innovation. At Starling we like change - it’s why we exist, after all.” In her latest blog, Anne Boden discussed Starling’s past year, the exciting opportunities for change this year and explains why the bank expects pre-tax profits to more than quadruple in 2023.
