At SLC we recognise the importance of apprenticeships as a way of upskilling colleagues – helping them develop the skills they need to grow their SLC careers. To mark Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025, we are shining a light on six colleagues who are undertaking a Data Analyst SCQF Level 8 Apprenticeship with tech training provider, QA Ltd Susan McMinigal and Iain Bell from our Technology Group and Susan Welsh, Dipo Oyenola, Sami Dar and kelechi igbo from our Change and Data team have all recently embarked on the 18-month programme. Susan McMinigal, who joined SLC in 2023, decided to apply for the apprenticeship because she wanted to formalise and enhance the experience and knowledge, she has built across many years of working in data. She said: “I left formal education after completing my degree 17 years ago, so I’m excited to be back in a learning environment. The fact that the course ties in directly with my role at SLC is great – I have lots of opportunities to put my classroom learning into practice, benefitting me and the organisation. We are currently recruiting for 12 new Student Finance Officer apprentices who will be based at our office in Hillington. To find out more and apply please visit https://lnkd.in/eNif6F2v
SLC has been awarded Carer Positive – Engaged Level accreditation in recognition of the supportive environment we have created for our colleagues with caring responsibilities. Carers Scotland presented the award to SLC at an event in our Glasgow office attended by our CEO, Chris Larmer, and colleagues from our Care Network. The accreditation is awarded to employers with a presence in Scotland who are taking steps to support carers not just in their Scottish offices, but across all their locations. SLC has been recognised for its work in raising awareness of carers and caring, as well as the steps it is taking to develop inclusive policies and practices that consider the needs of colleagues who are carers. Chris said: “We want to build an inclusive organisation where every colleague can thrive. The Carer Positive – Engaged Level award given to SLC recognises that we are committed to fostering an environment where every colleague with caring responsibilities feels supported and valued. Congratulations to everyone involved in helping us gain this accreditation.”
We moved into our new HQ at 10 Clyde Place in hashtag#Glasgow a year ago, and over the last 12 months, colleagues have been settling into our new home overlooking the River Clyde. Designed to provide a modern and environmentally friendly working environment for colleagues, the site has followed the UK Green Building Council’s Net Zero Carbon Building – Performance Levels guidelines. It was awarded BREEAM Interim Excellent certification for the design stage of the building in December 2024 - the globally recognised standard for best practice in the design, construction, and operation of sustainable buildings. Clyde Place has a number of sustainability features including living wall, solar panels and the building’s modern cycle storage facilities helped SLC achieve certification as a Cycle Friendly Employer in November. Chris Larmer, CEO at SLC, said: “It is fantastic to have such a modern, collaborative, sustainable space where we can deliver our purpose of enabling students to invest in their future through further and higher education. We are looking forward to the year ahead and continuing to be part of the Buchanan Wharf community.”
We are recruiting 24 permanent Student Finance Officers (SFOs) who will be based at our office in Hillington. The (SFO) roles are vital to the smooth running of the organisation. SLC processes up to 1.5 million student finance applications each year and our SFOs support customers at the various stages of their student finance journeys. Jackie Currie, Executive Director of Customer Operations, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for local talent to join SLC and be part of a team that makes a difference to the lives of students in across the UK. SFOs support our customers every day and are at the frontline of our service – we simply couldn’t deliver student finance without them. “We are passionate about unlocking potential and developing colleagues, which means our new recruits can expect to receive the training and tools they need to grow their expertise and progress their SLC careers.” Successful candidates will start at SLC on 24 March 2025 and will receive a reward and benefits package, which includes access to the civil service pension scheme, generous holiday entitlement, options to buy and sell holidays and access to a range of lifestyle benefits.
It's a big day for SLC as Chris Larmer becomes our CEO. Chris has been with the business for two years as Executive Director of Operations and we announced his new role in October. Chris takes over from Paula Sussex who joined SLC as CEO in 2018. Chris said: “Paula has done an exceptional job in driving SLC forward in our transformation journey and we are a better organisation because of her leadership. I look forward to continuing this work as we strive to deliver an outstanding customer experience to our eight million customers.”

Apprenticeships Work, that’s the message from SLC as it celebrates Scottish Apprenticeship Week. The organisation has activities planned throughout this week (7-11 March) to showcase the achievements of its apprentices and inspire the apprentices of the future. On Monday, the Leadership Team will meet virtually with some of the current cohort of modern and graduate apprentices, to discuss their experience at SLC and hear their ideas about developing the apprenticeship programme. On Wednesday, Paula Sussex, CEO, will go back to school and talk to S4 pupils at Springburn Academy in the outskirts of Glasgow, about apprenticeship opportunities within SLC. She will be joined by graduate apprentices who will share their experiences and answer any questions the students have about exploring an apprenticeship. And to end the week, Kaukab Stewart, MSP for Glasgow Kelvin will visit the Glasgow Office, on Friday, to meet with CIO, Stephen Campbell, and apprentices Hazel Fulton, Aidan McCrae, Cairn Foster and Jamie Law.
