AstraZeneca is a Best Place to Work in the UK for the first time! We spoke with Mene Pangalos, EVP and President BioPharmaceuticals R&D at AstraZeneca to find out how the company has earned its place on the list.

Congratulations on your first Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award!

Thank you, we are really proud of this achievement! Being a ‘great place to work’, and knowing this is voted for by existing and past employees, is a wonderful accolade.

It’s Not What We Do, But How We Do It

We have five core values that have been built by our employees and are fundamental to the way we work, each and every day. These are:

  • Following the science
  • Putting patients first
  • Doing the right thing
  • Playing to win
  • Being entrepreneurial

We all believe it’s not just what we do that matters, but how we do it.

Combining Culture and Innovation

Our culture is constantly evolving with the pace of our science and our business. Inclusivity and diversity fuels innovation and we ensure our teams are free to learn, be curious and see the truth. We also know we can’t discover and develop new medicine alone which is why we collaborate with world-leading experts and open doors to fuel new discoveries. We are never complacent and have a learning culture, developing our teams through dedicated programmes, an online global learning management tool and providing internal opportunities for development. In the past year alone, we have supported 602 internal moves in the UK to allow employees to broaden their skillsets and learn new things.

What Makes a Great AstraZeneca Employee?

We are always on the lookout for great talent, wherever this may come from. Whether you work in scientific research, clinical development, data science, finance, HR, or communications, we are all one team striving for the same purpose: to push the boundaries of science to deliver life-changing medicine. So, not only should candidates be great at their jobs, they should align to our values as well. As such, part of our interview process includes asking values-based questions, as well as asking candidates to display a deep knowledge and insight into their area of expertise.
