Hiscox is the highest placed insurance company in Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work in the UK for 2020, ranking at #4. Hiscox is gradually climbing up the Top 10, with a ranking of #7 in 2019. We caught up with Ben Walter, the CEO of Hiscox Global Retail, to find out why the insurer is a Best Place to Work.
What Makes Hiscox a Best Place To Work…
I could cite all the typical reasons like, “we have a great culture” or “we have huge opportunities.” And yes, those things are true. But I think the best way to describe why Hiscox is a Best Place to Work is to simultaneously acknowledge that it’s not the best place for everyone to work. It’s a great place for ambitious, talented people who want to build a business and be in it for the long-term. It’s a lousy place for people who prefer comfort and predictability. Keeping quiet and going with the flow won’t get you very far at Hiscox, but speaking your mind and backing your own judgment will. That difference creates a workplace that is fun, exciting, challenging, demanding, and rewarding. But it isn’t easy, and we wouldn’t want it to be.

Hiscox’s employees mention its great culture and a very strong values-driven ethos. Let’s find out more…
Hiscox has five core values:
- Courage - dare to take a risk
- Integrity - do the right thing, however hard
- Human – clear, fair, and inclusive
- Ownership – passionate, commercial, and accountable
- Connected - together, build something better
Our values are so core to our identity that I can’t describe how they contribute to the culture as much as I can say they are the culture. They are how we strive to behave everyday with all of our stakeholders: customers, shareholders, colleagues, and the broader community.
I was recently speaking to a friend at another company, and we were comparing the values of our respective organisations. Toward the end of the conversation, she just laughed and said, “of course, no one actually believes in this stuff, right?” I was stunned. I told her the day people feel like that at Hiscox will be my last day here. I meant it.
Listening and Learning
We don’t always get it right. But we do listen. Whether that’s through focus groups and meetings, the engagement survey or through sites like Glassdoor - we look at the feedback and consider how we can improve. This year, people told us we could do better when it came to manager effectiveness. This is now a focus for us and we’re looking at all the ways we can better support our employees as successful people managers.

Great Hiscox employees are people who are always at least a little dissatisfied with the status quo (you know, the people who can never quite scratch the itch that is telling them there must be a better way), and then have the gumption to do something about it. They are smart, to be sure, but most of the time attitude beats brains. Our best employees naturally treat the business like it’s their own and have a tenacity that wins the day. When we hire people, I could boil down what we’re looking for into three key attributes:
- Alignment with the values
- Passion and ambition
- A willingness to take a risk on yourself and back your own judgement
