What is health insurance like at Booz Allen Hamilton?

Pros

Good benefits (vacation, 401K, health insurance, tuition reimbursement), nice offices, great people, great culture

Cons

depending on which section of the company you work at you may get totally different experience. There is not necessarily an standard operation procedure which can be good and bad. Pressure for bilability is high but at the same time employees may not have much choice in determining their next engagement. This has caused so much unnecessary pressure all over the company. folks may be working on multiple projects just to get by and then in addition to client work, there is business development, proposal writing, people management, and other company overhead work that must be done. If you are just out of college I don't recommend Booz Allen as you won't get much mentoring. Unless you are hired to specific group with specific mission.

Advice to Management

Booz Allen is very top heavy and I never understood why. In my experience no one above a senior associate is really contributing to bringing new business. The senior and lead associate have the bulk of load of business on their shoulders. They bring new business, they write proposals, they do the work, make sure the client is happy and expand the work. Morale in my sector (transportation) was pretty low. there is not a lot of focus, and lots of crapshoots...Booz Allen quickly comes up with an idea, tries to march everyone behind it, try it for a second, and before people get a chance to show if the idea works or not, it is changed to the next one. This has caused so much uncertainty in the company IMHO. Of course being public doesn't help at all. You want to get fast results within one quarter!

Does Booz Allen Hamilton offer sponsored degrees?

Pros

Great benefits, tuition reimbursement, flexible schedule if contract allows. Lots of opportunities for career growth.

Cons

If you're remote, you're isolated. They focus the majority of their business in the DC, Northern VA area. If you end up rolling off your contract, you have to find your own work within the company. If you can't find an opportunity within a certain amount of time, then you get a lack of work letter and are laid off. While there are a lot of opportunities to educate yourself and grow your career, if there isn't a job available for you, you lose those skills, especially in the communications field.

Advice to Management

Work on building up other offices outside of the DC area.

Great benefits, tuition reimbursement, flexible schedule if contract allows.

Does Booz Allen Hamilton give compassionate leave?

Pros

Booz Allen was once on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list, it dropped off several years ago and never returned. This may have to do with the company slowly chipping away at employee benefits. The 401k match dropped from an automatic 10% to a 6% match. 401k fees are paid directly by employees from their accounts, and bereavement leave was decreased without any communication from management. At the same time the company still has an "off the record" expectation of employees working extra hours each week to make up for training opportunities that generally never happen. That won't be mentioned by any recruiter.

Cons

Booz Allen believes over-management is the key to success. The creation of a new job leader role just lumped additional daily/weekly responsibilities onto the most burdened employees, despite the previous construct working for most people. The amount of upper management is staggering and stifles middle managers who have to present financials and project reviews that are tailored to each one of their 4-8 internal bosses. As for external customers/clients, the company markets itself as a cutting edge IT leader, but severely lacks institutional knowledge of cybersecurity, cloud hosting/computing, and basic network engineering. But there's no doubt the powerpoint slides will be pretty.

Does Booz Allen Hamilton give time off to volunteer?

Pros

Good way to get a foot in the door. Offers free access to online courses. Great volunteer opportunities over the summer which allow you to meet other interns.

Cons

No HR related support for interns when dealing with internal conflicts, favoritism, surprisingly pretty uncoordinated for a big company and unfortunately because of my experience I did not want to return full time regardless of offer(despite it being a dream company of mine beforehand). I would definitely suggest interning in DC itself, Rockville is completely isolated from networking opportunities and other interns.

Advice to Management

I would suggest challenge leaders to be more involved and there to be more support resources for interns.

Does Booz Allen Hamilton offer housing assistance?

Pros

Good work environment. Really get to see what working at the firm is like. Really good access to leaders and others for networking. Good pay.

Cons

No housing stipend. Would be really nice especially for DC area. A lot of other top companies provide this.

Advice to Management

Stay available and open to interns. Be more clear about the dress code. They say "Wear whatever you want" but really they mean to dress more conservative and some interns take it too far.

No housing stipend.
