What is the hiring process like at Kroger?

      Pros

Good hours, I like my team, decent benefits, hiring process was easy

      Cons

      Corporate decision-making, high turnover, pay

      Okay

      Pros

      The hiring process was quick

      Cons

Management was not understanding and made things harder.

      PMO Maturity

      Advance program manager
      Former employee
      Cincinnati, OH
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

The hiring process for my role was quick.

      Cons

When I was hired, 3 days into the role, I was asked to lead a meeting that I did not have any context about, nor know what the problem was, nor I know the stakeholders I needed to include. I should have known right there that this company was not organized. They have program managers, and the business partners don’t understand what the role and responsibilities are for these roles. There is lots of friction because of this.

      Cons

They can care less about their workers.

      Great First Job

      Customer service representative
      Current employee
      Nashville, TN
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Worked around college schedule. Easy hiring process

      Cons

Odd hours, sometimes busy, lots of standing on your feet

      Decent Temporary Job

      Overnight grocery clerk
      Former employee
      Conyers, GA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

The work is easy if you're in decent shape. Pay was $17/hr, not bad for the area especially considering no experience or education is required. Hiring process was quick and easy. No drug test. Health insurance was decent according to full time employees. Will hire anyone, won't fire you if you keep showing up when scheduled. 10% off kroger brand items and double fuel points.

      Cons

Demonstrate any degree of competence and they will give you more responsibility with no increase to your pay. Some of the employees were dead weight and management didn't address it. Veteran employees (one with 3 and the other with 9 years at that location) who were effectively shift leads were paid the same as me, a new hire. So outside of management there's no where to go. Schedule was constantly changing, no two weeks were the same. Difficult to become full time.

Great People, But Unfortunate Decline in Culture

      Manager, digital analytics
      Former employee
      Cincinnati, OH
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

One of the reasons I remained at Kroger for so long was because of the people relationships. Many of the people I worked with in the corporate environment were good people.

      Cons

The unfortunate part of Kroger was the only way to advance was to leave your department. It was almost impossible to be promoted within your own department, because HR did not have the creativity or originality of thought to figure out how to promote an individual without having a completely new position description. It was the most ludicrous situation they created for managers, because they would lose talent to other departments when people became frustrated they couldn't get promoted for their performance. When I left, they also announced increasing the mandatory number of days in office to FOUR days, which for many individuals in the IT group was highly unrealistic and unneeded. We had already proven we did not need to be in the office that often, and it was also unproductive for us to be in the office that often. The only reason for us to be in the office was for Kroger to receive the tax incentives they needed from the city of Cincinnati - in other words butts in seats.
