What is the hiring process like at Sam's Club?

My review as someone who’s been working here for a week

      Business outlook

      Pros

Great hiring process, Helpful transition and they offer all benefits

      Cons

Pay is not as good but they offer incentives to make up for that

      Not worth it

      Pros

      Snacks, but that's about it.

      Cons

Was told during the hiring process I would be receiving a commission for each credit card and membership upgrade, but recently was informed we do not receive commission

Easy interview process with good pay for students

      Pros

Easy interview process, good pay for students.

      Cons

Have to notify management of events about a month ahead. Not really a con, but can be inconvenient if something happens on short notice.

Management makes or breaks the job

      Member specialist
      Current employee

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

When there are good managers, like any in retail store, it can be a lot easier to do your job. They always helped me with my schedule, and we had a good relationship.

      Cons

We were frequently understaffed, and the employees are barely sub-par. I'm not sure if the interview process is the issue or they are just hiring bad people, but there have been some very terrible employees in that store. They hire them back too after they get fired. I understand being understaffed and wanting people, but if they hired quality candidates in the first place we'd have less of an issue.

      Former employee

      Business outlook

      Pros

Love everyone that wasn’t a manager

      Cons

Favoritism, disorganized, no legitimate onboarding process, if you aren’t a team lead or manager good luck

      Cons

      Sam's Club Merchandise Associate Experience

      Merchandiser
      Former employee
      Mansfield, TX
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Being a merchandise associate was a very simple and easy task. Part timers would only work on the layout of products. Which were mostly bulked items, making it simple and quick. Fill time workers would work on layout till store closes at 8pm then begin stocking till 12pm.

      Cons

Could be heavy works for full time stockers. Depending on the store you work at there may not be that much open availability for overnight shifts or any at all. Changing your schedule can be a complete hassle as well

A lot of options, but no Full times

      Front line/cashier
      Current employee
      Cape Coral, FL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

Amazing place to work, the managers are friendly, they encourage dialogue and help you find solutions to your questions and learning process. Teammates are amazing and the work environment is friendly and welcoming.

      Cons

Just don't try to grow or get a full time, oddly enough, they have a lot of spots for part timers but not a single opening for people searching for a Full time. They will try to find any possible reason to justify the lack of interest in encouraging growth or lack of "opening positions" for people giving their best at the job even if you already have one year or more with them. They will try to justify their "decision" with any possible minor reason (tardiness, if you got points for being sick, etc) to avoid giving you the opportunity or a clear answer in why they "don't have any opening yet" but they keep hiring part timers every month and yet expect the existing employees to do the 40 hours of a full timer without being a proper full timer position.

In the end, you're just disposable.

      Tire technician
      Former employee
      Oxford, AL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

They can set you up with a company linked pay card if you're so broke that you don't have a bank account, which can help you get on your feet. Sometimes you meet great co workers. Don't rely on that though. I literally could turn my phone off once I left work. They did not demand I be available for calls, which I can respect.

      Cons

They will use you outside of your job description. Expect you to multi-role for no extra pay, then coach you for daring to work overtime to complete tasks. No vertical advancements unless you have any random degree or prior management experience. They will tell you that you are part time, then work you forty hours a week for literally four and a half years or more, then the moment they could transition you to full time, they hire a new person for you to train and don't give you a guaranteed full time position. Expect them to cut your hours the moment they can.

      Felt like high school

      Business outlook

      Pros

Associates were great and they were the only reason I stayed as long as I did.

      Cons

There was no real opportunity for growth. Friends in high places and favoritism over experience and performance . Not equal opportunity and will promise position to friends before allowing others to apply or even interview. Area manager/corporate was incredibly unprofessional and would yell at managers on sales floor while also pushing for hire of their friends regardless of there experience or professionalism, allowing them to act in a disrespectful manner to associates because they know they will get away with it being protected by the area manager. Constantly being reminded that employees are replaceable and willing to fire for not so good performance instead of training or offering help. One manager even forcing English speaking Hispanic associates to re-take an assignment already completed in Spanish due to their inability to train properly showing multiple examples of blatant racism. Another talking about firing associates to promote people in their friend group. attempting to.More bad eggs than good unfortunately. Workplace ultimately became toxic and unpleasant.
