I have been found by Derek (recruiter Prosum) and interviewed by Michael (CFO) and team in June 2019 on IT Manager position with potential growth to the CIO level role.
First interview was very positive, based on my impression. Michael said that his point is that new team member will take over all IT responsibilities which I have been complementally comfortable with. I hate micromanagement. So, we made an agreement that in a week he will make a decision.
After that I have received a call from recruiter and they also confirmed that Michael is very interested and I have been chosen as a potential candidate, I just need to wait for a decision.
After that they put me on hold and asked me through recruiter to wait. Derek called every week, 3-4 weeks after interview and then we agreed that there is no point in these calls and he will let me know if the hiring company make any changes.
In August Derek came back to me and asked me if I’m available. I asked him for the re-evaluation meeting for this position with Michael, because they changed a job description and I just want to make sure that my expectations are on the same place. I also asked for in person one on one meeting, because I wanted to discuss opportunity questions and compensation.
I have revised and send to the recruiter a new version of my resume based on consultation that better reflects my background.
Michael refused to meet me in person, saying that he met me already and the phone call will be more convenient way to discuss all questions. Of course, I accepted it, I didn’t have any other choice. But when he called me, he put me on the speakerphone and asked me for questions to his team, which I didn’t have at that time…I had questions for him… I started something bla, bla, bla…which I haven’t been focused on and at the end of the meeting I asked him for the one on one conversation.
He agreed to talk next day. Next day we had another nice conversation and he promised to make a decision by Friday. No decision on Friday, no decision on Monday… On Tuesday I asked recruiter to talk to Michael for the status update. And he came with following: “They liked what you had to offer but they interviewed someone with a bit more security background which is what the need focus on right now.” I was completely shocked… I expected everything, but not this…
1. They have changed job description focused on security, but no one asked me any questions about any security aspects on the second interview. On the second interview I said that I have a security background but no one followed with the questions…and I was not surprised…read the second item…
2. They don’t have anyone in the team with security expertise who can evaluate my security skills and experience. Of course, they were not able to follow and didn’t have any questions to me. Because they just didn’t know what to ask? I’m not talking about “kinder garden” questions about challenges and stuff 😊))))). So, they just rely on the words of any person who has a sales skill to present his security skills with no proof or any evaluation 😊)))) .
The bottom line:
1. I’m very upset how Michael handled all process. I sent him a “Pleasure to meeting you.” text on LinkedIn at the beginning (in June), he could have responded on it and say..hey, we have this and that..please wait..etc… but nothing…. It’s a human part.
2. The business part is… If you want to evaluate your candidate by personal characteristics its ok. But if you want to evaluate him from a business side, make sure you have someone who will be able to do it professionally.
