      Associate Marketing Manager Interview

      25 Jan 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Dermalogica in Dec 2023

      Interview

Encountering Ageism and Invasion of Privacy: The interview process took an uncomfortable turn as the executive was fixated on the date of my master's degree graduation, subtly probing my age. Their insistence on understanding my career trajectory led to an invasive line of questioning, compelling me to disclose deeply personal details about a challenging period when my son was critically ill, a time I navigated by freelancing. Such revelations about motherhood and personal hardships, I believe, should remain separate from one's professional qualifications and aspirations. Admission of Preferential Hiring and Discriminatory Practices: Despite my director-level experience and qualifications, the conversation was overshadowed by their preoccupation with my age and seniority, reducing the actual discussion about the job role to a mere afterthought. The interview didn't feel like an interview but like I was on trial in court. They were berating me to the point where I was almost in tears. I was frankly told that they preferred a candidate with significantly less experience, deeming my age and expertise as deterrents. This explicit preference for a junior profile, despite my decade of experience, was both shocking and disheartening. Reporting Unethical Recruitment Practices: The company's approach was not just unsettling but appeared to blatantly contravene fair hiring standards. It was an unambiguous display of ageism, compounded by an undue invasion of my personal life, arguably the most pronounced I've encountered in my career. The lack of focus on my professional capabilities and the explicit acknowledgment of my age and experience as negative factors compelled me to take action. Feeling a responsibility to address this stark violation of ethical recruitment, I reported the company to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), hoping to shed light on these discriminatory practices and foster a more inclusive hiring landscape.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What year did you graduate from college. (This was an age probe and illegal.)
