      Graduate Research Assistant Interview

      29 Apr 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Durham, NC
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Duke University (Durham, NC) in Aug 2014

      Interview

Sort of haphazard depending on the lab you want to work in. Usually pretty basic questions and not a whole lot of pressure. One interview with a lab manager wound up with only a couple of questions asked and the rest of the time was him waxing eloquent about various scientific issues! Still, it was definitely just a relaxed atmosphere with a lot of very intelligent individuals. They are not interested in grilling you or making you sweat to earn the job. Pretty typical interview questions, plus maybe some based on the topic of interest that the particular lab is working on. I can't think of any real hard technical questions that they asked, most of it was knowledge I had as a result of my education in a related area. You can expect to speak with several individuals, but that's not that bad considering you'll probably be working pretty closely with them for however long you will be in the lab. Most of it is probably to determine if you'll be content doing lab drudgery and if you'll fit the culture of the particular lab in question.

      Interview

There was only one informal and in-person meeting, which was not really an interview. I was asked whether I was interested in becoming a Research Assistant given the details of the project.

      Interview

It is good. The interviewers are from University so that they are very nice and provide insightful guidance. The questions are very academic, both creative open questions and questions about the basic term explanations.

      Positive experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Duke University (Durham, NC)

      Interview

The interview process was pretty easy. It seemed like more of a backwards interview, where they were trying to convince you to come to duke more-so than figuring out whether or not you should be there. This was an interview in the ECE department, so I'm not sure if every other department works the same way.

      Question 1

What was your favorite thing about Duke so far?
