      Software Developer Interview

      23 Dec 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at HCSS in Dec 2020

      Interview

They first had me take an 8th grade math test--quite literally, that is what they called it--and then I waited for about a week and a half after that. After waiting, I had a 30 minute phone call with a recruiter, which was very robotic. I then was scheduled for what they said would be a 2-hour technical interview which ended up only being an hour. The first thirty minutes was spent retaking the 8th grade math test--12 problems of a caliber like 'your car runs on 3 miles a gallon, and a gallon costs $20. How much will it cost to drive 60 miles?'. This was proctored, and the person proctoring it obviously didn't want to be there; she didn't introduce herself or try and make any small talk, and it was a very cold experience. I finished the math test in about 7 minutes, and the proctor told me to turn my camera and mic off and wait, since the next interviewer was supposed to come in later and they weren't ready for me yet. I then was made fun of for having my camera and mic off when the next interviewer came in, which made me feel bad because I was told to do so and didn't want that to reflect negatively on me. I then did a somewhat simple problem in google docs? They had me write it in google docs and not an actual code editor. The interviewer was cold and not that friendly during the problem either. It was an overall negative experience, and even if I am given an offer or if I advance to the next round, I will politely decline. Also offered low-twenties salary for their interns.

      Interview

Absolutely zero room to negotiate on remote work. Was asked to take a logic/math test. Not very difficult but you should take your time and take it seriously to score well.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at HCSS (Houston, TX) in Sept 2022

      Interview

Had a call with a recruiter and was given a take home assessment. On the call, the usual questions you would expect from an interview were given. The take home assessment was checking to if a given square was a magic square. I submitted the assignment with about 6 testcases showing that it worked. The only requirements given were to make sure that all sums equaled to the same number and that all values were unique, distinct from 1-n^2. I took a mathematical approach in checking that all values were distinct using the sum of natural numbers formula instead of unnecessarily iterating over the square to produce the most optimal solution. I also explained this in the comments. I was rejected saying that my solution did not meet the requirements listed in the document. I sent a detailed email back as to how my solution met the requirements listed in the document and an explanation, and never heard back. I don't think this is a very good reflection of the technical aspect of the company. I would have appreciated them letting me know they were expecting a different implementation rather that saying the solution missed requirements when it did not.
