      Software Engineer In Test Interview

      14 Sept 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Salt Lake City, UT
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Instructure (Salt Lake City, UT) in Sept 2017

      Interview

Phone call with the recruiter, in which I was given hackerrank challenges to complete. A 30 minute online meeting occurred upon passing the challenges, then I was invited in for an onsite. At the onsite I was expected to answer coding problems via whiteboard. I feel that I was able to successfully come up with passable solutions with the information I was provided; however, it seems I was given poor marks for not being able to immediately arrive at minor flaws the interviewers would allude to with very little clarity. It was apparent that I could write and test the solutions I provided but was disrespectfully told it wasn't going to work before the interview was even over. I was given feedback suggesting they were looking for a senior. If the posting had senior level requirements or said anything about it being a senior position, I wouldn't have even applied and would have saved myself the time and effort. They apparently want a senior software developer that is content with doing QA work.

      Interview questions [3]

      Question 1

They like String based questions. Write a function that determines whether a character has been removed from a String.
      Answer question

      Question 2

Write a function that returns pairs of integers that from an array that add up to a given sum. Make sure you clarify how large the integers can get. They make give you an example with small ints and then tell you that your integer data type is too small.
      Answer question

      Question 3

Write a function that determines if two strings are anagrams.
      Answer question

      Interview

Recruiter is super friendly and screens you. Next is hackerrank test and problem. Not to difficult. Then you meet with a Techincal interviewer when really they say your meeting with the hiring manager. The interviewer is cold, rude, and even swears at you. I did a brute force 0(n2) approach and was mocked. This interview was the worst i have ever experienced. Stay far away from instructure.

      Software Engineer In Test Interview

      21 Feb 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Salt Lake City, UT
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Instructure (Salt Lake City, UT) in Feb 2018

      Interview

I was contacted through e-mail and given a link to take a HackerRank test that involved 15 questions and three programming challenges. I was given 90 minutes to complete. Even though my solutions failed most of the tests, I submitted my code and passed the online portion. The challenges were difficult, but inline with what I understand to be part of a Software Engineer in Test position. This would be out of scope for a QA engineer position. The next day I had a video interview with a team lead that lasted 30 minutes. Two days later I had an onsite interview. I met with QA team leads, who each gave me a whiteboard coding challenge and followed up with questions on how I would test the function I had just written. Then I met with the product owner who asked similar question, in a more practical format. I was told I would receive an answer the next day, but this was a holiday weekend and the response was delayed until the next week.

      Question 1

How would you test a microwave?
