I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Jane Street (New York, NY) in Aug 2016
Interview
I applied online from their website, had an online exam shortly and a scheduled phone interview the week after, and had to fill in an online regulatory form before the second phone interview. Interviewer was nice and helpful if I needed a hint or input. A week later I received an e-mail saying that they don't have positions open currently that they could consider me for but will let me know if the company's needs change. So, no offer.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Online exam consisted of 4 very basic probability/expected value questions. Selecting prime numbers and probabilities of their sum having a certain value, coin tossing games, optimal strategy in a black jack style coin problem. Phone interview consisted of a brain teaser where a system of linear equations were expected to form and solve, and a deck of card problems, and a game where you exhaust a deck of cards and get +1 or -1 dollars depending on the outcome and given rules, and you have to determine the expected p&l in this game.
The process began with serveral online tests for maths and logic. They gave a personal interview to get to know the candidate better and evaluate fit for the company/role, then held a technical interview covering maths and logic problems.
Fun and filled with unexpected questions. The questions rely on fast thinking and fast calculations, and sometimes intuition because there is no sufficient time for me to work through the whole problem.
We started with a bit of small talk, followed by some probability questions. Ended with some basic algebra questions, Make sure to ask questions if you have any. Good experience, feels like the interviewer was trading.
