      Principal Customer Success Manager Interview

      22 Jul 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Chicago, IL
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Klaviyo (Chicago, IL) in Jul 2022

      Interview

Interviewing with Klaviyo was simple for the most part, if not a bit nebulous. I had back and forth messages with a recruiter, who I told that I wasn't looking to leave my current position. She insisted, so I thought it must be a role they thought I was a perfect fit for. After a phone screen with the hiring manager, they set up a 90-minute interview with three separate managers from the team. They asked basic questions that felt fairly bland and not tailored to the role. About a week after that, I got a basic, unpersonalized rejection letter from the recruiter and never heard a peep from the hiring manager. Hey, Klaviyo! If you are attempting to poach people from other good jobs, don't waste their time.

      Question 1

Questions were basic and didn't feel specific to the role. Things like "how do you manage projects" and "how do you communicate with teammates," not things like "what's your philosophy on customer education" or "what are some customer education strategies you've employed with success."

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Klaviyo in Jul 2024

      Interview

This was by far the most thoughtful and respectful interview process I've ever undertaken. My recruiter was proactive, highly communicative about timelines and expectations, and so personable that it made me feel much more at ease. I won't lie, the interview process is rigorous (as it should be) — for me, that meant a recruiter screen (at which stage they actually recommended me for a higher level role after learning about my background), an interview with the hiring manager (jumped straight into technical questions which threw me a little vs. "tell me about your background" openers but was overall a good experience), 2 back to back interviews with someone currently in my role and then the other Principal CSM manager, then a panel with presentation (hiring manager, the other Principal CSM team manager, and the Director of CS, and then finally a 1:1 with the Director of CS. In comparison, I was simultaneously interviewing for a similar role at another org (that I eventually got an offer for) that was 8 rounds and fairly disorganized at 2/3 the salary range. Klaviyo stood head and shoulders above the competition tbh. The panel required a ton of upfront work but

      Question 1

Assume you've already been at your job for 60 days. How would you drive growth and success metrics over the next 90 days (broken down into 30/60/90 day plan).
