      Backend Developer Interview

      22 Feb 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Kasuga, Fukuoka
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at LINE (Kasuga, Fukuoka)

      Interview

Applied for the Fukuoka office. First phase was a 3 hour online coding testing. 4 general data structures and algorithms questions taken from leet code. 1 small system design questions with minimal requirements. Second phase was a 1 hour online assessment followed by a 2 hour video interview with 2 backend engineers and an interpreter. The assessment consisted of 6 questions about basic backend dev knowledge and a question evaluating time complexity of a few search algorithms. The video interview was not well structured. The interpreter had zero technical knowledge and couldn't adequately translate my responses. I was only able to see one of the interviewers, with the other hiding away from the camera. The most frustrating part was the fact that they were clearly interviewing me for a backend monitoring role, not the backend developer role for which I applied. At one point during the interview I was asked "what command would you use if the system went down". I was given no context, so I tried to clarify. What system? What do you mean which command? Bash command for a specif Linux sever? No response. They simply repeated the question. Which command? lol I was not offered a position, but I wouldn't have accepted had I been. The two engineers that interviewed me were clearly not passionate about there work and were only there for a pay check.
