      IT Systems Administrator Interview

      13 Mar 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Houston, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at MRE Consulting (Houston, TX) in Feb 2018

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter after applying online. We spoke in depth for an hour about my background. I was asked how much experience I had in the skills listed in the job description, and to elaborate on them, and what I'd done in previous positions. The next day I was scheduled for a phone interview with the Operations Manager. It lasted about an hour and we went over my skills and into depth about certain things on my resume in particular. 3 days later I was scheduled to come in for a 1 on 1 with the Operations Manager. It was to last 1 hour, according to the calendar invite I was sent. Upon arriving at the office, I was quickly rushed through a kitchen and storage area into a conference room. It was there that I interviewed with the Operations Manager, which lasted almost an hour. We basically went over the same stuff we'd already discussed. He told me about himself, and about the company. I was then told that another individual was going to come in and give me a Technical Interview. This was not scheduled on the calendar invite I was sent. Luckily I didn't have any other plans or I would have had to leave. It took about 15 minutes for him to finally come in to interview me. He introduced himself as a Systems Engineer, and the interview was awkward and felt unplanned and unorganized. He seemed bothered to be there, and I personally believe he may have stepped in for someone else, who was originally going to do it. The Interview did not consist of any technical questions as to my background, or any of the technologies listed as requirements for this position. I was instead asked for suggestions in planning New Server Systems for clients. I don't honestly know if they have a solid idea of what they're looking for, but I wasn't quizzed on technical things in regards to my Systems background. I have a decade of experience as a Systems Administrator, and no part of the Technical Interview was in line with my professional experience. I don't honestly believe they're looking for a System Administrator, but rather someone who has a PME Certification or is a Project Manager, or someone who is in Information Technology Consulting Sales. While I have experience building servers, I am not a Project Manager or Sales Consultant; and I don't have experience recommending server systems for client purchase. In my opinion, they need to rethink the position and title, for future candidate searches. It was initially explained I would be an IT Sys Admin for MRE Consulting, supporting their in house employees and systems, and also supporting their external clients. But my in person interviews did not reflect this. The person who did my Technical Interview told me more about the company and the position. He stated a few negative things about the company in small talk, and maybe he didn't realize it, but it was a huge turn off. He talked about how long he'd been there, and seemed annoyed the company was hiring someone new. It was almost as if he was trying to talk me out of even wanting to work there. He explained the position in depth, and what I could tell is this, they are not looking for a Sys Admin They're looking for someone who has previously worked for an MSP, and someone who can sell new servers or cloud solutions. If you are looking for work as a Sys Admin this is not for you. After the interview, I was given a parking validation; and I was walked out. I wasn't given a tour of the office, or anything. It just felt like they were throwing me out. When I put my ticket into the machine, I was told that I had to pay; as validation was only for half of the time I was there. The receptionist only validated it for the 1 hour I was scheduled, and not the 2 and 1/2 hours I ended up being there. So I had to pay to leave. So be sure to bring cash if you interview here.
