I interviewed at Matter (CA) in Mar 2021

      Interview

Matter seems like a great company. First step was a video call with the CEO, Brett. He was extremely nice, and excitable. The call went well and he gave a lot of positive feedback, saying that he was very excited to move forward with my candidacy. The next step was a take home coding exercise. Brett mentioned that the coding exercise shouldn't take more than a few hours and not to stress over it. He made it seem like it was just a way to screen candidates based on skills with NodeJS and GraphQL. Similarly, the prompt was very lighthearted and repeatedly said that the project was open ended with little requirements. Specifically, the challenge asked for resolver implementation of a given datamodel. The GraphQL typedefs were defined ahead of time. Implementing the resolvers and basic error handling was easy, I completed it in a couple hours. Later, I heard back from Brett declining my candidacy. Because he had expressed so much positivity towards me, I pushed him to give me some feedback on why they decided not to move forward with me. They sent over some decent feedback saying that I had implemented the coding challenge correctly and to the specifications given on the prompt. Then they mentioned that they were declining me based on a few factors, some of which were that my code did not have unit tests included and that there were no comments. The weird thing here is that the prompt specifically said that no additional packages were required and no testing framework was included in the project by default - I interpreted this to mean tests were not required for this project. For the second piece of feedback, my code did include comments which leads me to believe that my code was not thoroughly examined. Matter does seem like a great company. My advice to anyone moving forward in their interview process would be to go above and beyond on the code challenge even though the prompt says otherwise. Make sure your code has tests and go hard on the comments.
