      Software Engineer Interview

      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Northstrat

      Interview

Extremely flexible benefits package for a small company. Interview process is straightforward and focuses on your strengths. You may be called for interviews with multiple teams at the company. When I interviewed, I found the company to be very personable.

      Software Developer Interview

      9 Mar 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Sterling, VA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Northstrat (Sterling, VA) in Feb 2018

      Interview

There were two parts to the in person interview. The first part was speaking to a developer who asked questions about things listed on my resume and described the role I was being considered for. No trick questions and to the point which was nice. The second part was speaking to the CEO about the company, benefits, and corporate culture. The benefits are impressive as they put 50% of your base salary into something called an Individual Benefits Account (IBA). This IBA is for the employees to take PTO (at there hourly rate) and buy health insurance through the company. If you do not need health insurance you have the ability to use it all as PTO (about 10 weeks!) or cash it out. If you do need health insurance, and buy one of the more expensive plans, you will still end up with 6-7 weeks PTO. A few days later I received an offer from the CEO that was a huge lowball! I responded stating it was actually less than what I currently made and was far less then what other companies were offering me at the time (I adjusted other company offers to be comparable to an offer with an IBA). The CEO and I proceeded to exchange a few emails where we discussed the definition of a 'base salary,’ tried to convince me that his offer was actually great for someone my age, and that he was genuinely confused as to why it was not competitive with other offers. It was all very convoluted, unpleasant, and disingenuous. Where most companies would politely accept someone’s decision to decline an offer, the CEO here instead attempted to manipulate me into what seemed like his scheme to get good talent for cheap, by throwing around an obscure benefit’s structure and bullying young professionals who are less sure of their financial worth. What made this all the more disappointing was that other friends I have in the industry told me prior to my interview that Northstrat low balled them and I'd just be wasting my time with the interview. TLDR : Carefully read the offer letter you get to determine if it was the amount you were asking for. The IBA is a great benefits package but keep in mind how much the 'total compensation' will decrease after you take PTO and purchase a health insurance plan.
