      Head of Internal Audit Interview

      11 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Reddit in Apr 2021

      Interview

Only made it to the first interviewer, who was retained specifically for this role (I think the firm was Egon Zehnder). So, not actually an employee of the company. He was perhaps the least professional person (interviewer or not) that I have ever interacted with. We had a hard time seeing eye to eye, and he interrupted me multiple times to restate questions. He interrupted me more than once within the first sentence of my response, and once even when I was re-stating his question. It was weird. At that time, I had maybe 10 conversations in the prior two years with executive recruiting firms (eg. Korn Ferry, LHH, IIC Partners etc.) and none have ever been like this. I literally stopped the conversation at one point to ask: "Are you OK? Am I saying something wrong?" He did not seem to know details of the role, the ideal candidate and the hiring manager's (CFO's) preferences. He did not know what work has already been done as part of this role (is there a firm working already to develop a generic control framework?). He did not have context as to what the CFO was looking for (Clearly, controls are the primary focus for year 1-2, what about long term? What kind of candidate is the CFO looking for? Management style?). He demonstrated zero knowledge of the role in general, especially with the primary focus area of internal controls. This surprised me considering he mentioned (several times) that he had placed Bumble's Head of Internal Audit. As a result, when I answered questions quickly, he didn't understand how it involved internal controls. When I took a step back to explain how it did (e.g., a new, unintegrated operating company is a completely different controls framework) he displayed visible signs of annoyance and interrupted me to repeat the same question. Maybe I assumed too much about his knowledge and should have just given sound byte responses ("yes, I've done it before"). He seemed like an intelligent guy, I hope I just caught him at a bad time. In the end, I passed on my comments to another person at Reddit, who said they passed it on to the CFO but I didn't stay engaged long enough and lost all interest anyway for unrelated reasons.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Have you headed up an IA function pre/during IPO before? Tell me your experience? What is Internal Audit? What have you done? Stop telling me what you have done. Describe a time when you did X? Let me interrupt you there and tell you to stop telling me.
