      Associate Team Lead Interview

      17 Apr 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Remote in Mar 2024

      Interview

Yikes! Super long and needlessly time consuming interview process followed by confusing feedback. Here was my experience: 1. Fill out their proprietary application form which includes several long-form questions unique to the company. The whole process took at least 30 min and I almost decided not to apply based on that alone (in retrospect that might have been a good idea). 2. Discussion with Hiring Manager. This was a good talk about values and experience. The Hiring Manager was easy to talk to, and provided some guidance on which role to continue the interview process for. 3. Discussion with Engineering Manager. This was a bit awkward, but overall was a good conversation covering managerial philosophy, experience, and some more specific questions about difficult situations. Pretty standard manager-level interview, and I received positive feedback. 4. Take home coding exercise. This is where things took a turn. This was a 'non-time limited' coding exercise that on the surface wasn't super complex, but clearly was designed to have several gotchas and booby traps. After spending 8 hours on it, I decided to pull the plug. Some parts were not quite finished, and I did my best to start those parts and document my philosophy and next steps. I then had the privilege of having someone I've never met comb through my code without any discussion. I received feedback that was a mix of some actual issues, opinionated disagreements, and nitpicks on parts that I didn't finish. I realize that I might feel differently if I had received an offer, but the whole thing felt like a huge waste of my time, and compared to other companies I spent significantly longer on the interview process. Multiple times I almost withdrew my application simply because of the amount of unpaid work involved in applying. If this was an intro to what it's like to work there, I'd assume the employees are overworked and there isn't a great culture of communication, async or not. Overall, it was a bad experience and it left me with a bitter taste in my mouth about the company.

Appreciate your patience and the time you've taken to share your thoughts. We understand that the length of our interview process was a point of concern, and we're actively working to improve this. Your input is invaluable to us in this process.
