      Engineer Interview

      4 Aug 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Scottsdale, AZ
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at STYR Labs (Scottsdale, AZ)

      Interview

The process started normal by talking to a few people to see if there was a potential fit. Nothing out of the ordinary. But the issues started when I tried to setup an in person interview. I was told it would have to be a day the owner was there (who was described in a cult like manor which should have been a red flag). Once I finally setup the interview for over a week later, I was not greeted when I walked in the door even though there was a meeting going on right there in the conference room. After a minute or two I was told to go into the back by someone in the meeting, who I found out after was the owner. After meeting with the owners assistant, I sat in the lobby for 23 minutes (14 minutes after my interview was supposed to start). The meeting finally ended as I was about to leave so I figured I would just move forward and see what happened. This is when I found out the person who was running the meeting and told me to head into the back was the owner. So after the owner held everyone in the meeting while I was sitting there waiting for my interview (he could see me the whole time), we finally started the interview. This was a complete train wreck. It was about 45 minutes with their "Senior" developers and the new CTO. The new CTO and I seemed to be on the same page and had good conversation. The other two had no idea how to interview someone. I kept the interview going by asking questions and making sure my story was told. After that mess, I figured I was going to meet the owner. Nope. Even though I had to some while he was in town, he didn't even take a minute to meet me. That told me all I needed to know about this company. I have been doing this for 18 years and I knew that I would never accept a position at this company. The owner is so scattered that he goes from one thing to the next and you can see all of it in their test lab. Product after product when they don't even have a core business locked down. His employees didn't even know his plan because I asked what the hiring strategy was because they just picked up a bunch of junior developers out of a code camp and his seniors said they didn't know what his plans were. I think we both ended at the same place, that I was never going to work there. And it seems the CTO is no longer there either so I feel I made the correct decision.
