      Customer Success Guru Interview

      24 Oct 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Toronto, ON
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Sept 2017

      Interview

      1. Application: creating a store thru Shopify's platform. I used this as an opportunity to sell myself, show off some personality and have fun. There are technical requirements that may vary depending on when you are interviewing ( I was required to add a dropdown menu, incorporate an app, and embed a video/voice clip explaining why I want to be a Guru). If your application looks good and fulfills all the requirements, you will receive an email from Talent Acquisition to set up your Life Story interview. 2. Life Story Interview. This has been well documented on glassdoor so do your research. It appears to be a "culture fit" interview, but I did find that the person who interviewed me was engaged and seemed genuinely interested in understanding who I am as a person. There are no prompts, and I'm not even sure if the Shopifolk who interviewed me even saw my application. I recommend understanding how you can capitalize on your "Life Story" to show why you would be an excellent fit for the position, as well as highlighting your key competencies and skills. Let your personality and communication skills shine. Build rapport and ask good questions. 3. The Gauntlet (skills test). The same day after my Life Story interview I was asked to book the Gauntlet- essentially a 2-3 hour role play with a Builder on what it is like to be a Guru. My role play consisted of 2 phone calls, 2 chats and 2 emails. Sink or swim, this was perhaps the most stressful part of the interview. After each round, your builder will give you feedback. APPLY THIS. I recommend reading through all of the resources they give you before hand, and even keeping those resources open. All questions asked should be available publicly via google or the shopify resources. 4. Chat w/ Squad Lead. This is when you get to talk to one of the Guru Squad Leads and learn a bit more about the Shopify Culture. Before this I was asked for my references (whom were contacted). They get your feedback on the gauntlet, and let you know a bit more about KPIs and will be available to answer any more questions. 5. Got the offer! It was quite a lengthy process and took a lot of time investment but overall, a very positive experience

First off, congratulations on getting an offer and joining the team! Secondly, it’s very cool of you to take some time to share your experience of the interview process with others who may follow in your footsteps. We love to see that! I’m glad to hear your interview process was a good one, in particular I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the Life Story interview and that you saw that the interviewer was genuinely interested in understanding who you were. It’s actually a common misunderstanding that the Life Story is designed to just assess ‘culture fit’ or that’s it’s a time when you should just ‘sell yourself’. The truth is that with the Life Story interview we’re actually trying to get to know the ‘real’ you to see if you possess those qualities that typically lead to long-term success here at Shopify. One of the key qualities we look for is a person's ability to be authentic in their interactions. We’re not likely to move forward with people if they’re only focused on selling themselves rather than just being real with us. It is also important to note that the Life Story interview is intentionally designed to support a diverse set of candidates so that not just those extroverts who might authentically like to ‘sell themselves’ succeed. In summary - show us your genuine self in the Life Story interview and trust the Talent Acquisition team to do the rest! To get the low-down on the Life Story and what we’re looking for, I recommend people check out an article here on Glassdoor called “How Shopify Scales Their Team to Hire for Culture Add”. It offers some great insight into our process so check it out when you have the time. For now I’ll say welcome aboard, and thanks so much for sharing your experience with all the good people we’re hoping to hire!

      Interview

The interview process was pretty intense. They asked me about my life story, but I’d also created a store before that. Then I had to do a technical interview where I pretended I already had the job.

The interview experience was professional, friendly and organized. Interviewee did notify via email whether I got the offer or not. Great to hear back the results since typically companies don't.
