      Software Developer Interview

      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Skayl in Jul 2018

      Interview

We had a short phone screen that checked for basic compatibility with the role. After that I was invited to an on-site interview above a self-serve car wash. Due to the bizarre locale and the outlandish nature of their claims, I believed that I was in the midst of a Matchstick Men style con. This put me on the defensive, and I was just waiting for a 'technical question' involving my SSN. After the on-site interview they gave me a small compensated task that took about 8 hours, established some rudimentary knowledge, and gave a chance to interface with the team a bit. The audition task got reviewed, and I was given a chance to fix a grievous null pointer error. The rest is history. I slowly became convinced of the team's legitimacy, and brought up to speed on their tech.

In a multiplayer arcade game on the web, which component will be the first bottleneck as more and more players join?

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Skayl (Westminster, MD) in Jan 2020

      Interview

The only interview where I felt like walking out of. Cofounder asked questions he couldn't answer himself and was extremely rude. He was also extremely narcissistic and had no reputable engineering experience besides another startup he worked for.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

When choosing a tech stack, how do you know whether to choose C# or Java ? How would you implement object oriented programming in C (not in C++) ?

We're sorry to hear you felt you had a negative experience during your interview. We strive for every candidate to leave our in-office interviews feeling challenged but positive, even when it turns out we don't feel there's a fit. Our hiring process, including our interview questions, are indeed unconventional - such questions suit our hiring goals. As a company breaking barriers in tech, it’s important we identify team members who are passionate, creative problem solvers, comfortable with there not always being one definitive answer, and disposed to support their positions with deep consideration and an understanding of the underlying factors. As a small, agile, company working a lot of R&D, the skill set best suited for our team members is absolutely going to be different than those of Fortune 500 companies – not necessarily stronger or better, just different. Thankfully there are a multitude of opportunities out there for skilled engineers, each with a different required skill set, and we’re happy to hear that you seem to have found a fit that works for both you and your company!
