I was initially contacted by HR to set up a phone interview, which was to be 2 weeks later. The HR representative was helpful and knowledgeable, answering my questions about the group, structure, and types of projects each division works on. I was also asked about my background, qualifications, and experience, and the interview with the engineer was set up.
Two weeks later, I got the call from a member of the metallurgy group, who seemed very rushed and distracted as if they were conducting other tasks during the interview. It was only a 30-minute slot, but the first few questions were the same ones that HR asked me in the initial screening call (tell me about your background, tell me what you do, etc.), which took up most of the time. The only technical question I got was regarding what I would do if a new hire asked me for advice on an alloy selection. Throughout the call, I got the feeling that the engineer did not want to actually interview me, but wanted to get off of the phone as quickly as possible. At the end of the call, I was told that I may be contacted by another engineer so there would be two data points.
It was two weeks from initial contact to the phone interview, but another 1.5 months before I heard back from HR.
