The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Starbucks (Los Angeles, CA) in May 2011
Interview
I filled out the application online. A few days later I received a call inviting me to a group interview or "hiring fair" at a local store. At the hiring fair there were two stages, a first interview with a single manager and a second interview with two managers. Apparently, if you don't pass the first stage you will not be asked to stay for the second interview. They said I would hear back in a few days, and I did. Then I had to interview with the manager of the store I was placed at (but this is not always required, she just wanted final approval).
During the interview they asked basic questions like "how do you handle conflict" and "what would you do if you caught someone stealing."
My advice is to just be genuine and outgoing. They are looking for people who can deliver "legendary customer service" so if you are too quiet and reserved you won't stand out to them. Smile a lot and answer questions truthfully. Personality is the most important thing in these interviews.
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
In the past, how have you handled conflict with a co-worker?
Basically a short chat about my availability, my interest in the job, why I want to work there, how familiar I am with coffee and what my past experiences in hospitality were.
Easiest interview I've ever had. I was only asked 3 questions, 'tell me about yourself, what are your strengths & weaknesses, what is your availability?' Lasted about 10 minutes maximum
Thank you for taking the time to write your feedback. We appreciate your input and are happy to hear that you’ve enjoyed the interview process here at Starbucks.
it was great. I answered every question thoughtfully and easily. You have to have two interviews, one with the manager and one with the district manager. It is a in person interview. They ask many questions and will either hire you on the spot or you will have to call to see if you get the position.
