Interview
Interview Experience at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation
I was initially excited about the opportunity to interview at VGH, especially after reading positive reviews on Glassdoor. The process began with a 15-minute phone screening with a recruiter who was friendly and asked relevant questions. After the call, I was asked to follow up via email with an answer to one of the questions, which I promptly sent.
The second round was an in-person panel interview with three team members. A few questions were challenging, but overall the 50-minute interview felt fair and well-structured.
Unfortunately, the communication afterward was disappointing. I was told to expect an update by the following Friday, but I never received any follow-up. Despite reaching out once more via email, I did not get a response.
While I understand that not every candidate will move forward, timely communication—especially after multiple rounds—goes a long way. A simple update would have been appreciated and is a reflection of professional courtesy.

Question 1
Critical feedback you received from your team, how did you dealt with it?
It was around 45 minutes consisting of ethical and situational questions.
Asking about “if you entered this persons room and this was happening what would you do”
“If you were in the elevator and two nurses were talking about a patient what would you do”
I think it depends on the specialty/unit you’re interviewing in for the situational questions but overall it was good!

Question 1
You enter a patients room and they’re experiencing respiratory distress what do you do?
I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation in Apr 2018
Interview
- There was a brief HR phone screen where I was then scheduled into an in-person interview. The HR person was fairly quick with an email confirmation of the location etc and indicated “there might be a writing exercise” though she wasn’t sure, and didn’t confirm by the interview date.
- the first in-person interview consisted of two hiring managers and myself. I was asked a series of questions that mixed culture fit and skill fit. Then, I was asked to complete an exercise to prioritize tasks in a given scenario, presumably so they could assess my working style and soft skills. I then had to explain my response and walk them through my reasoning for the ordering I chose in the scenario.
- I was invited to a second interview where I was told I would be assessed for fit with the team, so the team members joined. The questions matched my expectations and focused on my working style and a bit on skills. I was asked to provide references by the hiring manager at the close of the interview and told that I would receive a call within a week.
Unfortunately that call never arrived and I received confirmation that I wasn’t selected after about 2.5 weeks. I requested feedback and never received any, nor did the HR person acknowledge my request. From the time of application to the final email was roughly 6-7 weeks.
