      Software Engineer Interview

      30 Sept 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Vevo (San Francisco, CA) in Sept 2016

      Interview

I applied online and was contacted by a recruiter shortly thereafter. She and I spoke briefly and ensued to schedule a technical interview video call with the team. She and the team were great -- I had some obligations that made my schedule unpredictable but everyone was super flexible and eager to accommodate. The interview itself was exactly how anyone would want an interview to be (especially a technical one) -- the subject matter was sensible, pragmatic and relevant to the position (e.g. no eggs dropped and no salesmen traveled), and my interviewers were super chill. As anyone in my position could hope for, it felt less like I was being interviewed and more like I was just working with some dudes at work. I was invited for an onsite, but I had some really compelling opportunities that I chose to pursue instead. It wasn't an easy decision to make since I got nothing but good vibes but it had to be made nonetheless. Awesomeness breeds more awesomeness, so I have no doubt that they'll end up with the perfect addition to their team!

      Easy interview

      Application

      I interviewed at Vevo

      Interview

Fairly standard interview with a tech screen over a video session while doing an algorithm question. I was asked to come on site and got to virtually meet the CTO who I think would be amazing to work under. Unfortunately I had the worst interview experience in one of my on-site rounds. The interviewer was extremely condescending and it was the only time I ever considered walking out of an interview. The interviewer's question had 5 parts to it and if you didn't know how to solve the first part, you would not get the other 4. He refused to move on if you answered it incorrectly unless you were silent for 3 minutes. Even after saying I didn't know the answer, he asked me to guess. Whenever I guessed he went out of his way to make me feel as if I was dumb for even suggesting that particular guess. I definitely will never be applying to VEVO and telling others about my experience.

Some domain specific, some easy DS&A. Across the board the DS&A questions were easy. Domain specific tripped me up.

      Interview

Recruiter reached out to me then screening phone call followed by technical screening with one of the engineers. I got a great impression about the Team and the company after the conversation. An on-site interview total with 5 people included: - technical challenges, whiteboarding - lunch with the team, - discussions with the team's project manager - interview with CTO.
