Founded by Stanford University Libraries in 1995, HighWire Press was formed to help academic publishers to host peer-reviewed content online.
The Journal of Biological Chemistry published by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, was the first to launch on the HighWire platform.
In 2014, Highwire Press enjoyed a significant equity investment from the technology fund, Accel-KKR. This has enabled us to invest in the technology that keeps our customers at the forefront of digital innovation, while retaining our academic integrity.
Today, HighWire’s Intelligent Publishing Platform supports over 3000 journals, books, reference works, and proceedings.

I have been working at HighWire full-time (Less than a year)
One of the biggest draws for me was the “opportunity gold mine” the company represents without the usual red tape and corporate rhetoric found in global companies. There is a very simple corporate structures which allow you to communicate ideas and information through all layers of management and in fact the business as a whole. The very friendly feel I have experienced from both the internal teams as well as the client base, that I have interacted with, is rare to find in an SME today. In short, I find HighWire a passionate growth company with huge aspirations.
You need to be able to stand on your own two feet, there is little micro-management and each member of the team, at whatever level, is expected to hit the ground running. This is echoed at the global levels as well from what I have seen in my time here. This kind of environment may not suit all people as it is fast pace and you do need to think on your feet often outside of your comfort zone. The only other con I could express is that the industry is extremely “old world” in its thinking and the company tends to pander to this rather than be disruptive with it’s approach and technology.
Advice to Management
Expand and encourage the collaboration efforts between the global office more. In the short time I have been around I have found this to be a great resource in both getting up to speed with global markets and activities as well as provide some great best practice tips. The information available internally and through the LMS is often spread around and unorganized so getting though the white noise is wasted effort. Keep the company focus on growth and start shedding old practices by taking on a pioneering ethos rather than just meeting the current needs in the market.
I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at HighWire (Belfast, Northern Ireland) in August 2016.
Asked technical questions and questions designed to assess my personality. Standard Dev questions.
Decided not to take the post as heard very negative things from Belfast staff through a colleague who knew staff there. Heard things such as false promises made to entice staff in relating to benefits, training and development, job responsibilities. Also was told morale was low which seemed to be the case when I visited. Got bad vibe from the place. Have read online that HighWire is a sinking ship, both here and on social media. Was unconvinced it was a good place to work.
