The courts' main jobs are to interpret laws and determine applications of the state constitution. There are two primary levels of the Indiana Courts: trial courts (including circuit, superior, county, and local courts) and appellate courts. The Supreme Court of Indiana, the Court of Appeals of Indiana, and the Indiana Tax Court are all appellate-level courts. The first Indiana court consisted of three judges appointed by the governor in 1800. Today, the system consists of more than 400 judicial officers hearing nearly 2 million cases annually.
