Good product, but bad leadership

Pros

Interesting technical challenges and engaged customers

Cons

Very political. Job performance does not appear to be related to actual metrics or goals, but instead how company politics play out. Engineering just got almost entirely rinsed when a new leader came in. Leadership says they want you to speak truth to power, but actually don't. If you have the CEO's ear, you can manipulate optics. In fact, its better to convince the CEO everything is going well rather than actually doing a good job and delivering, especially in engineering. Optics around success of a product are often colored by a small, incredibly vocal minority of customers. Software delivery velocity is incredibly low due to massive technical debt. Budget for engineering is shoestring so I don't see that debt being addressed effectively. Especially when independent self-starters are forced out if they don't toe the line of the new VP of Engineering, who is a poor listener and feels threatened by almost anyone who knows what's going on.

What may seem like politics is far from fact. We try our best to use data, feedback and ultimately thoughtful judgment in making decisions. Yes, the former VP of Engineering caused almost half of the team to quit. I expected change, but not in the manner things were conducted. Yet, I truly believe in second chances. To your point, "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." Upon the second time fooling me, I made the decision to depart ways with our VP. We have a great leader and fit in place. We are moving 1000% ahead and not looking back.

Pros

Employee benefits and unlimited PTO

Cons

Careers at AboutGolf vary. They can be fulfilling or draining depending on your role, how the company is performing, managements mood, and your manager. There are good managers and bad managers. The bad managers are known among the management group, and it's easy to spot. The work can be fulfilling as well with the autonomy offered-again, depending on your manager. The cons in the organization are values, lack of focus, direction, follow-through, give and take. Many resources are wasted on projects and people that are assigned and commanded then retracted. The wrong values and cultures are glorified. While the company makes every effort to care or solicit feedback from their employees, it is criticized or falls on deaf ears. On the flip side, if employees aren't engaging in the company's efforts to provide feedback, they're low key reprimanded as well. Standards fluctuate across leaders and groups and not all are held accountable in ways they should be. Working overtime is not valued so don't waste your personal life there. Mistakes are harped on as a distraction from the real issues that lie within the company. Overall advice, not a great culture has evolved over the years, and if you value a modern and caring organization, look elsewhere in tech. Better company vision and values can be found elsewhere. People are replaceable anywhere, especially here.
