Toxic culture and deceptive management

Pros

If you are desperate you can work here.

Cons

Finding a good job can be tough, and it may seem worthwhile to take a job that claims to offer high pay and support career growth. However, I urge you to think carefully. Please do yourself (and anyone else who might depend on your income) a favor and don't trust Accretive Technology Group. If you value your job and seek to work for a company with integrity, this is not the place for you. Despite the company's claims, there is a stark contrast in how employee relations are handled. My own departure from the company was unexpectedly abrupt, managed by HR without prior notice, warning, or a clear explanation. After being let go, I was instructed not to reach out to management. This practice raises concerns about the discrepancy between the company’s proclaimed values and their actions. The management lacks experience and supports a blame culture that negatively impacts morale and efficiency. It is disheartening to see promotions based more on favoritism than on merit, with the hard work of dedicated employees often being discounted. Furthermore, management does not foster an environment of collaboration, nor do they promote career growth or assist contributors in succeeding. Additionally, the company’s involvement in managing multiple porn sites is troubling. Despite claims of empowering their users, there is a significant discrepancy between these statements and the actual content, which often promotes the objectification of women. If you are uncomfortable supporting pornography, I would advise against working here. Be very careful. The job market can be challenging, and I understand that you need to make a living, but I recommend taking a step back, trusting your instincts, and seeking employment elsewhere.

Pros

Fun culture, great work-life balance, laid back and not-so-corporate vibe, lots of good people. Profitable, debt-free company.

Cons

* Pay is generally low * I agree with other views here criticizing management. There's a lot of backstabbing and there's a sort of "every man for himself" culture. A lack of managerial discipline rewards mercenary behavior among managers. This is bad news for job security. You and your entire team could be out of work in a moment's notice on the pernicious whims of a middle manager (Full disclosure, that's how I was laid off). * If you're a developer hoping to find cutting-edge technology, or even a basic level of technical competence, you won't find it here. Your days will be spent shoveling at a mountain of tech debt and fighting retrograde attitudes. The stack is a lot of spaghetti code held together with duct tape and prayers. * Company is profitable, but it is in decline, too sluggish and saddled with tech debt to innovate or stay ahead of the competition. * There is a huge disconnect between management and technology. Consequently, the gap between what's expected and what's technically feasible can be as wide as the Grand Canyon. The company would rather spend millions on developing proprietary code than thousands on industry-standard, off-the-shelf tools. Management is stuck in their ways, with a dubious resistance to adopting any new technologies and a general mistrust toward their own engineering organization. Management ignores any information contradicting their long-standing beliefs.

We are very sorry you had a poor experience here, and wish you the best in the journey ahead. We certainly have much to work on and will continue to do our best to create a culture that appeals to engineers who are both brilliant and supportive. Thanks to the sustained efforts of these talented engineers, we are far from any sort of decline, as growth continues to result in records day after day. We appreciate the part you played in that while you were here; and thank you for the feedback so we can further refine how to do things.

Pros

Great co-workers in the engineering department, with very positive, laid back attitudes. Agile development. Bonus — corporate parties are pretty nice.

Cons

The upper management is very dysfunctional. If you are an engineer who cares about the work you do, solving difficult problems, and expect honest feedback from the management — be prepared that your work can be reassigned to someone else after it’s nearly complete, and the management being completely dishonest with you about nearly every issue.

Thank you so much for the feedback and the specific critiques - especially on the point of honest feedback since this is a practice we extol and try to practice to the best of our ability. This is clearly something we can and should continue to improve. We are sincerely sorry that moving your project to another team was so discouraging. Rest assured, the decision was not taken lightly and we do this only as a last resort if something is not working out on the team. We hope that you have found a position that perfectly matches your sensibilities and talents, and thank you for your contribution while you were here!
