Upper management watched me like a hawk when I worked for AMFAR. What made it worse was that they did not understand the work I was doing, and yet pushed ideas for me to execute that would not be successful. I left because I felt I was set up for failure and would likely take the fall whether or not it was my fault that outcomes were poor. Additionally, upper management seemed to prioritize "looking good" over "doing good," and that is not why I work in nonprofit.
