I have been working at AppNexus full-time

    Pros

The calibre of people at the company is very high, and there is a genuine desire to be honest and create the best products in the industry.

There is a lot of training available, and the company's ongoing focus on diversity and inclusion is pretty inspiring.

Colleagues are keen to help each other understand the product and solve their problems.

AppNexus pays well, is ethical and appears to be meritocratic.

    Cons

You are expected to know the product well regardless of which position you are in. This is not a con, exactly, however there is pressure and expectation to maintain this knowledge across the majority of roles.

There is a reasonable social culture at the company, but it's not the same as, for example, an agency or a young start up.

    Advice to Management

Try and ensure remote offices feel more included in what's going on at the NYC HQ.

I have been working at AppNexus full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team currently, both globally and locally in London. Everybody is smart, driven, helpful, friendly.

Definitely an ethically operating business, when it comes to internal integrity and partnerships, which is refreshing.

Heavily product driven. hundreds of engineers. There a lot of power under the hood.

Ambition to build an open internet, where independent publishers can survive, marketeer achieve results, and bad actors don't have any space.

CEO deeply understands and steers the platform, has a lot of business acumen and social awareness. A rare combination.

It is encouraged to switch teams, if one is interested in a different field of work. Very supportive.

    Cons

Some convenience in getting the day to day job done is lacking. Sometimes one doesn't have all the tools available in a commercial role to really make the client impact one wants, and would need to learn how to run queries and combine reports with Phyton oneself. Better automatised insights to help clients would be great.

The same thing that makes the platform so successful – a lean operating software stack – creates challenges as clients expect a more handholding type of relationship, which is not the philosophy here. You see, handholding is the opposite of lean operating. This is fine when client expectations are aligned. However some teams are putting loads of extra hours as the market doesn't always work that way.

Heavily product driven. Yes, this is a pro and a con. Product is the centre of power and can work somewhat compartmentalised.

Career progression is very vague. Generally good people tend to stay because of culture and people and eventually it will be rewarded, but the process could be more transparent, straight forward and inclusive towards all departments. Hard to find a mentor.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on our strengths, keep putting the money where the mouth is.

    Pros

    A fantastic team in London.
By setting a very high bar in the hiring process, Appnexus makes sure its employees are incredibly smart, ambitious and passionate about Tech.

    Cons

Given the caliber of the team, you need to be comfortable with that level of challenge

    Always 're-org'ing
    NY / HQ-centric bias

I have been working at AppNexus full-time

    Pros

Agile, nimble and ready to change course. mistakes are allowed and there is a learning feedback environment

    Cons

shifting business model design hurts delivery, NYC centric with very little appreciation for global dynamics. decisions made in NYC without consultation or appreciation of the outside world. Too many managers have not worked elsewhere and so are trying to create a world from their own limited perspective. still too much landgrabbing goes on. too many decisions held at CEO level

    Advice to Management

Please get clarity on what you are offering and to whom and then get every one on board. please decentralize some decision making to empower people outside NYC.
