    Pros

    You can work from home

    Cons

Project I have worked on (Bane) is a shambles. Guidelines keep changing and you have to read up on the new ones each time (unpaid.) Numerous issues with invoices, elements of the project not working properly etc. Seems like somebody on an apprenticeship is running the project

"Transcriber in Exeter office - Little to no care from management"

I worked at Appen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Relatively easy and unvaried work if you are a quick typist and not faint of heart (some transcription content can be quite brutal). Lovely colleagues.

    Cons

The management at all levels is a shambles. You are not trusted to complete your work like an adult professional, and managers instead treat the office like a school environment where you are told off for talking and breaks are rigid. It takes 3 to 6 months to train a transcriber to the full company standard. Fully trained transcribers will often go above and beyond their production expectations. Yet the management treats them as completely expendable. If you have any needs too inconvenient for the company (e.g health issues causing longer absences or doctor's appointments) they would rather alienate you and risk you leaving than be flexible and try to accommodate you or treat you like a human. I believe this is partly why the company was struggling for money when I left. In my experience they would never take any advice or suggestions from everyday staff. I believe it took over a decade to upgrade to new computers, actually practical desks and better software despite this being the main improvement suggestion. The company also took the stance of taking on as many new contracts as possible without vetting (i.e scrambling for money), leaving transcribers gobsmacked with video files of 12 people talking over one another in a room - as this by anyone's standard is impossible to transcribe the company made a monetary loss on these files. They would not listen to transcriber's insistence that taking on these contracts is bad for the company. If you were an exceptional transcriber, chances are you would be looked over for opportunities for higher positions because they couldn't take the hit to their production figures. While I worked here, these issues coalesced to form a sort of culture of fear where nearly everybody was discontent with the job and management but did not want to make any suggestions or rock the boat.

    Pros

*still thinking*....... nothing. not a thing.... Actually, tell a lie. The pretty colours on the website.

    Cons

Shocking. never experienced something like this. They have ignored all 8 emails I've sent. Still have not been paid for work done over two months ago. This is not the company for hard workers who expect to be paid for their time. Very disheartening and unprofessional. This company is an illusion, don't be fooled. I cant believe they have got away with as much as they have. My next email is to the CEO. (doubt he will even respond) - will update if he does.
