Worst Experience of My Life

Pros

I left the company before I moved to Atlanta to work there permanently.

Cons

I accepted a position with this company under the title "Front End Developer with PHP". The ad posted focused primarily on front end skills, I was interviewed based on my front end experience, and I took a skills assessment that focused exclusively on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript development. I was told before I accepted the position that the PHP portion was mostly focused on supplementing template development and light work like fixing broken forms and plugins. On my first project I was given the task of developing a PHP-based backend using their custom, in house content managment system, building out the user system and components, and writing all of the MySQL queries. This clearly falls well outside the scope of front end development and the work I agreed to do at the salary I accepted. When I asked management if this was standard, I was told that 'the way we do things here is kind of peculiar' and subsequently released from the company. During my interview, the manager informed me that all of the managers there are experienced developers themselves, which is why I find it hard to believe that they do not understand the difference between a front end developer, a back end developer, and a full stack developer. You can't claim experience and ignorance at the same time.

Exciting projects and a fast-paced environment

Pros

We always have new projects coming in, and we get to learn about new technologies and often support older technologies while implementing new aspects to a client's system. We also find ourselves solving technical problems and providing solutions to problems our clients aren't always even aware of yet. It's challenging and rewarding work when you build something you know other teams don't get to. It's not all technical though, we also get to work on fun projects with animations and other media.

Cons

It's not a place for those who don't want to learn new things or be thrown into the deep end of a project, because that's a guarantee. We avoid cookie-cutter technologies like frameworks and pre-built templates, so most beginners won't fare well if they are not driven to learn and push themselves to grow.

Knowledgeable Team with a Great Company Culture

Pros

The management: The management at Applied Imagination really gives you the opportunity to grow within the company, especially since the team is quite small. Before I even started, I was asked what I would like to transition into in the near future. The team here really knows their stuff and can solve any problem. They're very experienced, but easy to talk to and always take time to explain things to me. You can also expect to be noticed and complimented when you do a good job. The company culture: The culture is great! We spend a lot of time getting to know one another and interacting between busy work days. It would be difficult not to feel at home here. Plus, there are free snacks and company lunch every week where we get the opportunity to reconnect as a team. There are also events outside of the office. This is my first job after graduating from college and I think I made the best decision to join this team. I see myself here for a long time and it's a great feeling to really like he work that I do.

Cons

Workload: Since the team is small, the work can pile up. You will be asked to do things that you have little to no experience in, but this is to be expected. Many people thrive in this kind of environment. Just be careful not to let the work follow you home!
