Pros

Great benefits, decent salaries, great work life balance. Everyone is hired as a Senior Developer so the level of competency is usually very high. New Remote policy (2 days a week).

Cons

Slow or minimal technology innovation. As an insurance related company, AF tends to move slower than other technology companies. New frameworks or stacks are explored but often not implemented. Using “new” technology like the latest Java version, NodeJS, cloud based providers are frown upon and require new projects. No bonuses for non-developers. DBAs and QA analysts do not get bonuses. Slow VPN for remote users. This past year AF started a remote work policy, however the DevOps team has not been able to keep the VPN working fast at peak times. Change takes a long time to be implemented. Lots of our member companies use Cloud solutions but the Senior team insists on keeping some of its infrastructure onsite. Product/Business analyst team cannot communicate directly with members, this causes lots of missing requirements and sometimes leads to losing development time by redoing features (sometimes more than 2 times). Very flat structure, no room for advancement. People with more tenure rather than matching skills are often picked to become managers or leads.

Pros

I work in IT and have been with the company for over seven years. I have worked in many places over the years, but this is the best experience I have had so far, including a company I owned myself! Benefits are great, along with the friendly family atmosphere. Over the years I have known a lot of very smart IT professionals, but this group is really a cut above the rest. Really a first class group from top to bottom. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for a new home, and indeed, we have many employees who have come from other companies around the area and I know they appreciate what we have here at Arbitration Forums. I know of others who have left for seemingly greener pastures and have then come back to us, or expressed an interest in coming back.

Cons

Arbitration Forums is a fairly small company, so if you are looking for a lot of advancement opportunities, you may not find them here. I think the overall great culture more than makes up for this. Not to mention the great stability of this company as the Arbitration wing of the Auto Insurance industry, in business for over 75 years.

Arbitration Forums Response

Unfortunately some of what the former employee says is true. Because AF is a member driven company, priorities sometime change very quickly. Arbitration Forums, prides itself on being a company that continually eliminates processes, procedures and activities that slow us down or do not add value. Sometime this necessitates uncomfortable change.
