Growing company with good people

Pros

Backblaze is one of those companies that is "just different," in a great way. I can confidently say it's one of the best professional environments I’ve worked in. I genuinely believe that Backblaze fosters a culture of collaboration, innovation, and respect. Leadership has been approachable and genuinely invested in employee growth and well-being. Over my time here, I’ve had the opportunity to take on impactful projects, develop new processes, and work alongside some pretty amazing people. It’s refreshing to be part of a team where contributions are recognized and ideas are valued.

Cons

Like all maturing companies there can be growing pains around scaling & process improvement. There are changes happening as we evolve and grow, but I do feel like there is a good work/life balance and opportunity to contribute to making an impact at Backblaze.

Pros

Great social programs with fantastic energy. No real deadlines, good work-life balance, and flexible remote working policies. Some great people scattered throughout the org who understand how to run mature companies. There's some excitement from branching out from consumer backups to the more enterprise-focused B2 product

Cons

No real deadlines (yes, it's a pro and con), weak leadership, and some teams spend $ like water while others are forced to expend inordinate amounts of energy to save pennies. At times the company is run like a retirement home geared towards employing obsolete empire-builders who have lost their edge years ago instead of focusing on running an effective business. This results in insane politics where industry-agreed-upon practices are tossed aside and some groups "own" technologies or processes they have no business running. Ignorant mob mentality in business social collab. platforms. Compliance is always a struggle because people only care about security or privacy if it's their own privacy. People who would have been fired from other functional companies continue to exist and waste multiple teams' time and energy. Equity compensation for most is less than worthless

Pros

I had never heard of Backblaze when I was recruited to work here, but it's easily the best place I have worked in my career this far. Backblaze hires smart people, pays them well, provides awesome benefits, conducts meaningful and creative team-building activities, and continually engages with employees to ensure they are satisfied. They have low turnover because employees are overall incredibly happy here. It's amazing how many companies can't figure out this very simple formula. There are no slackers here. Everyone is great at their job but not arrogant about it. Employees are given latitude to be both strategic and tactical and make decisions without micromanagement. Senior leadership is highly approachable, transparent, and involved. There's a strong emphasis on company culture and diversity. Many people at the company are remote, but Backblaze has figured out remote collaboration so no challenges there.

Cons

It's a rapidly growing company and it can be hard to keep track of who's who. Better processes are sorely needed or processes are constantly shifting because of new team members coming on board. There is really no onboarding program other than "Go schedule meet and greets with these 20 different people." No training in company tools like Slack and GSuite and Jira. You have to be willing to dig in and figure a lot of things out on your own. For a small company, work can take a VERY long time to get done. Some teams are fast and reliable to work with. But sometimes work that has to go through other teams can sit and sit and sit with no explanation as to why it's not moving forward.

Pros

I appreciate, as a shareholder, the drive to cut costs and increase revenue HOWEVER the methods being taken seem like they're ripped out of a 1st year business student's playbook - immediate, short-term, tweaks to the business that gut the workforce but show positively in earnings calls and earnings statements. There is some cleanup of legacy employees who have acted like roadblocks to the scaling up of the company but this is a mixed bag (see "Cons")

Cons

Newer leadership is decimating the existing organizational structure to purge the organization of "legacy people" for better/worse so they can install their own direct reports. Some practices, not unfamiliar to most experienced people, are unethical and borderline illegal. Leadership will retroactively tank reviews for high-performing individuals, citing personal opinions and erroneous data to justify reductions in force (and prevent future lawsuits). As existing employees watch their colleagues disappear weekly, they have zero psychological safety or motivation to continue performing well. Something that's eroding morale is seeing job postings for non-US locations with titles that match existing roles.

Thank you for your contribution; we appreciate your concerns. The changes introduced over the last few years ensure that we are a solid and sustainable company in the long term. We’ve tried to do this transparently during all-hands meetings and through written communications. I understand that times of change can create uncertainty and concern, especially for those who’ve been with the company through multiple growth phases. We are expanding our global presence and looking to hire the best talent worldwide. This includes expanding our hiring efforts globally. While this has been communicated previously, we acknowledge some may need further information. Leadership decisions - particularly around team structure - are not taken lightly. That said, your concerns around fairness and transparency are essential to understand. Any allegations of unethical behavior or compromised performance processes are taken seriously. We encourage you to share more through internal channels, including your HR Business Partner or our anonymous reporting tool (TinyPulse) if you're open to it. If you feel that your individual performance review was improperly conducted or disagree with your supervisor’s assessment, please let your business partner or HR know so they can investigate. We’re also onboarding a new employee growth and development tool that should provide a broader view of feedback and drive more conversations. - Robert Fitt, HR (sorry for the wall of text, Glassdoor doesn't allow line breaks)

Pros

some good folks at the bottom of the chain

Cons

The place is poor with money and poor with leadership. Top Heavy. Execs spend lavishly on travel and other unnecessary expenses, then lay off workers to make up for their mismanagement of money. No accountability. No spine.

Thank you for your feedback. Over the past year, we’ve worked hard to improve our compensation programs. All employees are eligible for our equity and bonus programs (both of which were improved in 2025), allowing them to share in our success. Our travel budgets are modest, and employees (including executives) follow our travel and expense policy. If you have specific concerns or examples of this not happening, please contact your manager, HR Business Partner, or anonymously via TinyPulse (sent to the HR team). - Robert Fitt, HR (sorry for the wall of text, Glassdoor doesn't allow line breaks)

Great Company with Great Values!

Pros

Backblaze is a great company to work for, with fantastic coworkers and truly impressive benefits. There’s real opportunity for growth and advancement. Like many growing SMBs, we’ve faced our share of challenges getting everything right, but the intent has always been genuine. Our product is strong, and the recent leadership additions—especially Marc, our CFO, and Jason, our CRO—have made a significant positive impact in moving the company forward.

Cons

A few missteps have happened along the way, but I truly appreciate the level of transparency we get during our weekly company meetings. Our CEO consistently shows accountability—he’s fair, humble, and approachable, which is a rare combination, especially in Silicon Valley.

Pros

• Strong, values-driven culture where people genuinely care • Leadership is accessible, thoughtful, and people-focused • Great work/life balance and flexibility • Development opportunities are growing, with more investment in training and growth • Very competitive pay • Generous benefits that support overall well-being • Focus on DEI and inclusion is strong

Cons

• Recent changes have been a bit challenging to adjust to, though they’re already showing a positive impact revenue-wise • Some transitions with new leadership are still in progress and will take time to fully settle • Hybrid policy is reasonable and well-intentioned, but full remote flexibility would be ideal for some roles
