Pros

The Newcastle office was once filled with pleasant people, staff turn around used to be minimal and there was a family-like atmosphere to the workplace. It was a pleasure to go in and work hard together.

Cons

Things have changed in the North East. What a shame. Horrible team of Directors starting with the Managing Director, a big blame culture exists and the motivation is at an all time low. I remember how things used to be when I first joined but gone are those days. Now if your face fits you will be OK but this isn’t often the case so no doubt you will be treat like dirt, belittled and taken for granted.

Horrible Place to Work

Pros

High salary compared with other industries.

Cons

Horrendous racist colleagues. Extremely unprofessional. Half of the (small) Customer Care team really don't care about people's issues and can be downright rude to customers - they are just there for the completely unwarranted high salaries. No-one monitors their calls because once the sales team have got your money Bellway have no interest in you. Sexual harassment from one director in particular - he was renowned for it and I experienced it first hand. If you are a prejudiced British dinosaur whose opinions were formulated in the 70's, and/or you read the Sun, then I'm sure you'll fit in.

Pros

Corporate Company. Bellway Brand Name

Cons

At the point of your interview you have high expectations of what you are being told of the standards that Bellway expect and what is expected of you. What the sales manager fails to explain is that they are a bunch of tyrants ! Within the sales management team (from the top to the bottom) they are completely out of touch of reality. There is a complete lack of support. They rule by fear ( bullies) – you are not allowed to challenge or question any decisions, you are not encouraged to discuss any solutions you may have to a problem. If you dare too challenge in a positive constructive manner they will make your life hell – by changing the development that you are working on and send you to one which is significantly further away from your home – just to prove a point! If there is a customer who is unsatisfied – you are expected to resolve it without the face to face support of the sales management, as they always hide behind the telephone. They don’t understand that employee members have a life outside of Bellway and they don’t have any flexibility towards individuals situations. The staff turnover is unbelievable mainly due to the negative treatment by the sales management. I lost count of how many experienced excellent sales staff that left due to the intolerable management inadequacies. Your commission is taken away from you at the drop of a hat for what ever reason they can find. Never encouraged to progress withing the company - it's a chore for them to complete your one to one form and half of the time they forget. I asked for the process for a progressive career path and was told there wasn't one! They make verbal promises and never follow up with a email. They make it very difficult for you to book holidays – you follow the rules in the corporate manual – the management team make up different rules for the region – which is totally unfair and they get away with it. Passive aggressive behavior -You are told directly by the head of sales never to contact group sales for anything ( yet group sales send emails / memos to the sales staff and at the end of each one it states contact me if you would like to discuss) and never to raise any questions if group come to the region for a meeting. I now know this is because they are protecting their own positions and don’t want to be questioned about anything that may be raised – you are expected to sit there like a robot. The complete management team need to stop and think about how they treat their team members, adjust their own negative bullying attitudes and book some training courses for themselves as they are totally inept in management. Newcastle Head office need to investigate the abysmal, deplorable, horrendous, malicious, negative, unpleasant, vindictive attitudes of their management team – It’s time they stopped turning a blind eye to this region. I would never work for this company again. Think very wisely before you become another Bellway statistic !
