Incompetent leadership

Pros

ICs are super smart and hardworking and kind. always a pleasure to work with them. Technical leaders in engineering are especially strong and know what they are doing

Cons

leadership is scared of competency because they have no idea what they are doing. they put utterly unqualified people in powerful positions just because they're friends with the founder and/or they are good at presenting other people's work to the ceo. working with incompetent leaders makes you feel like living in a dark joke People who did the most work never got proper credit, if not getting punished in the recent disastrous reorg. no wonder why people are leaving across the org Business outlook is poor with no growth and high turnover

Smart people, poor senior leadership

Pros

- Compensation is competitive across most departments - People are generally kind and competent - The work is engaging - Opportunity to work with some exceptionally talented individuals

Cons

- Senior leadership is lacking, especially on the product side - The technology stack itself is impressive, but that has yet to manifest to product differentiation from Chime, Cash App, or even big banks - Product org is quickly shrinking because the heads (PM and design) are extremely difficult to work with - It seems these people stay in positions of power at the company due to their personal friendship with the founder - They did a small round of layoffs and weren’t about to pay out most cash bonuses this year. This is not too surprising given the market conditions, but ideally they would treat department heads with the same accountability as the individual contributors.

Pros

Nice office, but that is it.

The people in leadership turn a blind eye to very poor behavior, there is IC to IC unprofessionalism that is swept under the rug because the bully had knowledge of a critical system. My manager keeps burning through people by throwing them under the bus following his decisions. If you bring these issues up with HR, HR will turn around and make your life more difficult. I wished I kept paper trails of all the requests I've made to HR and the "we'll look into this" responses. Or the disengaged 1:1 I had with my manager after I raised issues with him with HR. The HR leader is buddies with all the leaders, your well-being is not the priority. Please keep a paper trail if you decide to join this company. It is inevitable that you will encounter very poor behavior in this company. Especially when it comes to money. Although this is standard best practice in general, it is especially important at this company. It is best to just avoid it.
