Pros

Their products can help improve patient outcomes

Cons

Please read this if you are considering joining AbbVie, as I hope this will serve as a warning to you are a prospective candidate or looking at career opportunities here. This was by far the most troubling workplace and highly toxic environments I’ve ever experienced in my career. I worked in Talent Acquisition and witnessed firsthand the horrible and unethical hiring practices of hiring teams, as well as a culture of blame, intimidation, finger pointing, and lack of accountability from Talent Acquisition leadership, specifically within the US Commercial/ Therapeutics sector. When concerns of unethical hiring practices and biases were uncovered and raised to leadership, they responded by saying things like, “That hiring manager has a high performing team and has been with the company for a long time so there is nothing we can do.” There is a shocking amount of discrimination in their hiring practices, especially from managers within the sales organization that I’ve witnessed firsthand, and despite their claim of a diverse workforce, their actions show quite the opposite. Another troubling area that I witnessed is that an employee’s individual performance/merit will not solely allow you to grow with this company, but rather how much you “drink the kool-aid” and grovel to certain leaders. This is evident by the leaders they put in place, and the shocking lack of accountability and ethics that they demonstrate. I would urge anyone who is considering joining this organization to really consider if this is the kind of culture you want to experience on a daily basis, which from my personal experience was a culture of disrespect, belittling, lack of resources and support, and zero respect for a healthy work-life balance.

Pros

Big Pharma Name Recognition: Having Allergan/AbbVie on your resume provides industry visibility.

Cons

Extreme Governance & Bureaucracy: Allergan is paralyzed by red tape. There are far too many governance layers just to get basic regulatory strategies vetted out. Flawed Compliance Infrastructure: Product approvals are heavily dependent on documentation. However, current records are completely inadequate. Management fundamentally fails to understand how these systems are interlinked. Unqualified & Absentee Leadership: The leader with department oversight completely lacks the expected knowledge and experience for this level, making her a massive liability. She is rarely in the office but knows exactly how to work the system. She aggressively pushes for unnecessary, in-person regulatory meetings solely to accumulate personal travel points rather than to mitigate actual business risks. Disastrous Transition Management: The leadership transition wreaked total havoc across the department. Negligent HR Department: HR shows zero interest in investigating why good talent is leaving the company. Alarming Job Security Signs: It is a massive red flag when a leader encourages employees to apply for roles entirely unrelated to their expertise, or receiving automated AI notifications about job openings outside your department.
