AbbVie plans to begin monitoring badge usage. This method may not accurately reflect attendance and could have several drawbacks. Many employees travel for work at least 25% of the time and frequently attend offsite meetings. Additionally, the idea of being monitored could create anxiety for those who work in the office. Many of us are parents; for instance, what happens when a child is sick or schools close? Furthermore, since the pandemic, AbbVie has introduced more fully remote positions for new employees, and this new monitoring system for some employees, while others are exempt, could exacerbate the existing friction between office-based and remote workers.
