Possibly ok as a stepping stone - Manager Cengage Employee Review

Pros

Good salaries and place to work if you are a Software Developer / Engineer or in Product Management. Senior leadership have a clear offer to US Higher Education customers - i.e. good market proposition. Some nice perks (snacks, and often food available). Regular social events both in and out of the office.

Cons

No clear strategy or market approach outside of US Higher Ed (Gale, Skills, International currently appear adrift). You have to be in the right ‘cliques’. If you are not in the right groups your voice is unlikely to be heard. ‘Preach’ Radical Candor, but this only works top down. Most employees will say on surveys that staff can be candid, but those who are candid are criticized. Global organization of only around 5000 people, but a very complex organization that relies heavily on personal relationships and personal networks (see the ‘cliques’ comment). This makes it very difficult for capable new staff to have an impact – unless they were sponsored in by someone in an influential position (either by positional power or via cliques). Cengage has gone ‘all in’ for Agile in the technology division to the extent that it really has become ‘what was the question, because Agile is the answer?’ This makes innovation and transformation nearly impossible as everything is expected to bubble up from below. Cengage drastically needs to transform due to the bureaucracy, reliance on personal networks and organizational knowledge to get things done. Overall, this has to be the most frustrating place that I have ever worked. A lot of staff feel as though their voice is not heard (even those in Software Engineering) yet there is regular talk of open door policies, radical candor and openness. The reality does not match the stated intent. I really liked and valued the CEO Michael Hansen, however, the things I have seen ultimately rest on his shoulders (particularly the cultural shift below) so I cannot endorse him any more. Recent announcements and actions (including mandatory training on radical left wing political ideology, for all staff) have effectively told heterosexual Caucasian white males (and especially Christians) that they are no longer welcome and should expect to progress very slowly or probably not at all. The lurch towards accepting radical left politics as company policy is worrying. Cengage preaches diversity yet has demonstrated that it is against the most important diversity of all - diversity of thought. If your views are not ‘far left’, you will be increasingly uncomfortable in this company.

As a company we are always looking to improve, so all input is taken seriously – and you’ve certainly given me a lot to think about as we continue our efforts to build a diverse and inclusive culture and workplace. We have hundreds of training courses available to our employees who seek to further develop their skills in any number of areas. But we only have two required training courses for employees covering our anti-harassment and privacy policies. It is imperative that all Cengage employees have an understanding of what is acceptable in the workplace as we endeavor to create a safe and inclusive space for all. That is not left or right wing. It’s just good employer practice. On a related note, it is true we have been publicly and proudly vocal in our support of civil rights for all people, and we will continue to do so. Pros

Company has some interesting approaches to the market and in the past they seemed value employees. There are some good employees there and there was, in the past, visionary leadership, but the people with the vision and leadership skills left the company a few years ago.

Cons

The company actively de-values employees. They had a project they called "Project Horizon" where they told all employees they needed to cut costs, so the company was going to have multiple layoffs over 3-5 years - but nobody was allowed to know when, where, or why - - just one day large swaths of people would be gone. That hung over everyone's heads - for years, and is indicative of how Cengage values employees - it doesn't. Everything is about trying to secure new funding and prepare for an IPO, so they stopped investing significantly in the products about 3 years ago and that's about when they stopped acting like they cared about employee wellness as well.
