Pros

Like any Americorps position - the Segal award. Invaluable experience in terms of serving in a school, trainings that are offered for PD, and career services.

Cons

Very long work days. If you are concerned about child welfare in any way there is a large ethical concern about Focus Lists; Americorps members receive a case load of children who they are "mentoring" with heavy emphasis on SEL, Academics, and attendance. This is concerning as most mentors have little to no training and are barred from any meaningful work due to lack of certifications/degrees/etc., so the students suffer from subpar support. Team dynamics are also incredibly wonky and many folks leave due to toxic and unsustainable work environments

Pros

You do very meaningful work and the staff truly care about you and what you are doing.

Cons

School placements can be quite far from where you live, and the days are long (7:30 am - 5 pm). Often is exhausting, but you stay for the kids.
