Pros
- The patients are often nice and the older staff are full of wisdom and fond memories of how the hospital used to be - dorm rooms you can sleep the night in if you're caught out - decent salary packaging, although the provider, smartsalary is awful.
Cons
- They're super cheap on anything that isn't essential and regulated. Example of forcing admin staff to do the work of 2-3 if others call in sick because they won't pay OT for available staff. This doesn't happen with clinical staff because they're mandated. - advancement opportunities aren't great. Most staff take a pay cut when the move up to management. - pay is poor in comparison to QLD health. - There's the joke of "Mater quality" whenever something breaks. The hospital is extremely stingy and will almost always go with the cheapest option. - The majority of staff members are kind and caring, but it is not uncommon for staff to have an us vs them mindset with patients and I think it's only getting worse. I've heard staff complain about being asked to get patients blankets, questioning if they think they're in a hotel. Others joking that patients complaining about staff talking loudly at night shouldn't be there if they're well enough to sleep.
