The way you treat people on the way out is as important as how you treat them on the way in. - Mine Geologist Rio Tinto Employee Review

Pros

Wage is ok. Role is ok.

Cons

No development, there is little engagement between site and Perth office. Lots of little rules, then changes to rules then exceptions depending on who you are. Requests for pretty much everything, from development to new computers, fall on deaf ears. No movement, both lower personel and middle management. If you leave, either through redundancy or through resignation the company treats you like trash. Current round of redundancies were handled very poorly with people given no time to say goodbye. Teams told they would be impacted but not until next week means people are on tenderhooks for a week. Resignation is seen as a betrayal of the company. If you are a bad worker you get taken off site and paid out the month. If you are a good worker you are forced to stay the whole month. My leader didn't know how to challenge his workers and is happy to just let everyone stew. Had no ambition to do more than what was simply required. Superintendant during first two years were good but since then has been filled with either incompetant or leaders who arn't leaders.

Pros

Benefits are fantastic, employee share program, inexpensive insurance options with generous HSA contributions ($3000 per year), ample opportunities for career growth for those willing to relocate (internationally sometimes)

Cons

Mining is cyclic, layoffs are always a looming threat, depending on role 50-60 hr work week is common

Pros

Local environment is very friendly and laid back. Everyone is helpful. The benefit package is nice as well. We do get the option to purchase company shares, 100% company match up to 6% for 401k plus additional deposits.

Cons

Our company was recently purchased by Rio Tinto and their IT groups are very secular and specialized which makes it hard to communicate and get things resolved. I’ve also compared my salary to others with the same job title within manufacturing companies in my state and found my salary is way below the benchmark.
