Pros
Decent pay for an entry-level role once probation period is complete. Reliable hours. Often a fun work environment.
Cons
Misleading hiring practice: I was recommended to opt for dispatch instead of ramp simply due to passing an incredibly simple maths test with basic arithmetic. When I enquired "What does a dispatch agent do?" I was told, word for word, "It's like adding up the weight of the bags and stuff." The "part time" hours are not as to be expected - they mean part time by comparison to 12 hour shifts. If you opt for this you'll be working ~8 hour shifts on a 6:3 roster, with the three days off often taking place during the middle of the week. Poor Communication and Literacy Rates: My name and contact details were relayed incorrectly after the interview. Was not told where to go / what to do on my first induction day - had to chase the info. I wasn't the only one this happened to - of eight people expected on the first training day, only three turned up including myself. The other two were late due to recieving no info, and were berated as if it were their fault. I expect this problem is down to the fact that they still rely heavily on paper documentation for almost everything. Shift Pattern: Shifts change from night to day (or vice versa) half way through the stint. There are more than enough separate lines to just have everyone do day shifts one stint, then night the next. Seemingly no reason why this hasn't been implemented. Immature, School-Like Culture: Often a good laugh, however bullying and misogyny are rampant. Thick skin required, avoid at all costs if you're a woman with some self respect. Lack of Internal Opportunities - High Turnover: Everybody you meet will have been there either 0-2 years or doing the same thing for over 20 years, no inbetween. It's a foot in the door at the airport.
