Pros

The non senior team members I worked with were great. It seems like most of the people I enjoyed working with have left the company however.

Cons

The senior team created a culture of fear. People were afraid to share opinions especially with Katie and Paul. If you did share an opinion you were berated, made to feel stupid, or told very harshly to do what Paul wanted anyways. Any push back was seen as insubordinate especially if you are a woman. Women are not respected at all at Voxy. It is nice to read that they finally have their own bathroom and actually promoted a non senior team member woman but it was not that way while I was at Voxy. I agree with the previous posters in regards to how women are treated. While at Voxy I was told that I should be more flowery and emotional. I guarantee that a man never received that review at Voxy. The 50 hour work week that is mentioned in the employer responses seems like spin. I routinely worked over 10 hours a day, answered emails when I went home, and was expected to be available on the weekends. Working on weekends was typical before a feature launch because Katie or Paul would freak out and make the team completely change everything. The language classes sounded nice in the beginning but they are a job requirement, not a perk. You must attend at least one class a week. This is great for some but for others they became burdensome and there was no way not to go. The other critical postings really sum up what working at Voxy was like.

Voxy Response

Voxy has not been successful with all of its hiring decisions. In some cases, this has lead to a mismatch of performance expectations and, in some cases, a disgruntled employee. This situation is not unique to Voxy, but we view situations like this as opportunities to improve. Regarding respect for women, this is very important to me personally and I’m disappointed that someone had this experience at Voxy. I wish I had known in real-time so that it could have been addressed. The best people to speak about this topic are the talented and kind woman who are currently employed at Voxy. I encourage any candidate to reach out to the woman on our team and get their perspective. You can find most, if not all, of them on LinkedIn and they would be more than happy to share their experience of working with Voxy. If not, we'll openly discuss any points that are raised in this post during the interview process. The average day at Voxy is 930-6pm. It will vary based on milestones. The language classes are a required perk. Employees that are aligned with our mission and want to get a better perspective of what our users go through gladly welcome the opportunity to learn a language on behalf of the company.

Pros

The students are interesting and motivated. Overall very easy to work with.

Cons

Voxy bought Fluentify a couple of years ago and slashed pay 25%. This year, they will totally eliminate Fluentify, and give the tutors there the possibility of continuing work on the Voxy platform. This change of platforms involves another pay cut. Yet in typical Voxy style, they refer to this move as "an exciting new opportunity". Every time the company cuts its teachers' pay, it insults their intelligence by using this Orwellian language ("an exciting new opportunity").
