Pros

Free snacks, monthly birthday party.

Cons

Starting around early 2017 they seemed to systematically start getting rid of older employees who were good workers. 50 and above seems to be the target age. They’d then replace them with new hires in their mid 20s. Is it a cost savings move? I honestly don’t know for sure. It became obvious when a long time employee was fired for no apparent reason a month after their 50th birthday. It’s like the movie Logan’s Run. Don’t even bother applying if you’re over 40. The CEO and founder even ‘resigned’ just around his 50th

Thank you for your perspective. The data (the demographics of who is joining and leaving Xero) just doesn’t support your perception. Every role attracts a different type of person, with different skillsets and years of experience. In the customer experience area, for example, the role attracts people with accounting degrees. Some of our people are new graduates while others are mid-career folks who no longer want to be a part of an accounting firm. People leave Xero for a variety of reasons as well. In the past year, we’ve had a number of folks leave because they wanted to work with a smaller start up again and were less interested in company that is in scale-up mode. For our CEO/Founder, he moved to Chair of the Board, because, after 10 years at the helm, he wanted more time to do other things. Many startup founders make a similar shift at the ten year mark. We do value wisdom and experience; and we value a growth mindset that keeps all of us learning, growing, and innovating. Please reach out to your People Experience Business Partner if you have concerns or questions. -Julie (Director of People Operations)
